Accompanied by v v ravi - violin, J VaidyanAthan - mridangam

It was nice to attend a concert away from mylapore-tnagar bastion ,in annanAgar where there was a thyagarAja arAdhana one day festival. LGJ's sister (I forgot her name, some one can help?) was championing this concert. Predictably every number was compositions of sadguru thyagarAja.

1. shree raghukulamandu(RS,S) - hamsadwani
2. sogasujooDa(S) - kannaDa gowLa
3. enta vEDukondu - saraswati manOhari

4. ennaaLLu oorakE (R,S)- shubhapantuvaraaLi
5. maanavyaalagincaraa(S) - naLinakaanti
6. ksheerasAgara (R) - devagAndhAri

7. anupama guNaambudhi - atAnA
8A. O rangasAyi (R N S T) - kAmbOdhi
neraval in the line "bhUlOka vaikunta"
13 minutes of alApanai , 4 minutes of violin return ,9 minutes of krithi, 10 minutes of neraval and 15 minutes of swaras
8B. tani

9. paahi raama doota - shhadvidamaargini
10. nI nAma rUpamulaku - sowrAshtram

The concert had a great start with excellent shruthi suddham , his hamsadwani swaras were gripping and excellent. The next kannaDa gowla came out very good with the krithi being sung in correct pace with excellent swara patterns . His gifted voice aided him to present an excellent enta vEdukondu in saraswathi manOhari. The concert dipped a bit in the subhapantuvarAli rAga especially in the first half .He presented a very leisurely ennaLLu in a vilambakAla mode and was excellent in diction . He appeared to build a slow pace of swaras , just as I was thinking he will go more he wrapped the swaras, would have been better if he had not even started the swaras in subhapantuvarAli.

The sarvalaghu downpour in naLinakAnti was excellent .The contrast of devagAndhari gelled well and as the krithi demands it was very leisurely delivered . The atAnA was mediocre, certainly he did not bring the questioning bhAvam of atAnA. The concert peaked at the main , it was a fantastic kAmbOdhi all thru for 51 minutes . His neraval was excellent which had a 5 minute first half where there was more spacing with phrases that were more lengthy , while his second half was breezy and fast . The swaras were awesome , having heard a lot of his kAmbOdhi I felt his swara patterns had lot of manodharma filled sarvalaghu patterns not the usual rush to tara sthAyi lift to "ga ma pa mA gA " .

There was a request by Shri LGJ's sister to sing the next krithi pAhi rAma and for the first time heard all the charanams of nI nAma rUpamulaku. The tani was too short as JV had a train to catch, His play was excellent and he never slowed during kAmbOdhi . Shri v v ravi was just good in violin , his best play was in shubhapantuvarAli.Overall an excellent concert.

Rajesh,
Wish I had heard him--especially his ennALLu. We know of Suryaprakash's prowess in soaring into a lively sphere and in keeping the momentum of the concert going. EnnALLu truly would have been a treat. I would like to hear more such ruminative pieces from him. Of course, he sang O rangaSAyi too...

Lalgudi's sister I think is Srimathi.

Srimathi Brahmanandam to be correct. If I am not mistaken she is based at Bangalore.

Is there a Pahi Rama Doota in Vasanthavarali or is that the same Shadvimargini?

As per bible, the krithi is sung in both rAgAs. suryaprakash sang in shhadvidamaargini
