With Mumbai experiencing the coldest winter in 50 years, i enjoyed a wonderful concert by Balamuralikrishna(BMK).
Well his was the first concert in reverence to the great master series organised by the sabha. He represented the Semmangudi school. The concert began with a majestic varnam followed by Deva deva where the neraval at Jatha roopa was crisp and brought the essence of the raga. He could have done justice to the Poorvikalyani piece. Though the ragam was very well structured and the usual phrases were included i felt while rendering the song, he wasn't too confident. May because he may have just learnt it. I enjoy neelambari no matter who renders it. But this dikshitar composition which is in the praise of Neelayadakshi was soulfully rendered. But his Karaharapriya stole the show. His exposition lasted for almost 20 mins and not even once he slipped. I think after singing such an eloborate ragam, it was apt that he chose Chakkani. According to me one of the best krithis that brings out the raga so well, he did full justice.

Yes his concert was worth praising and the president didn't loose the opportunity in honouring the artist and said that a new star was born. Well I would opine with him and say this youngster is surely the future. Srikanth on the violin accompanied filling in the gaps at the right time. His exposition of Poorvi Kalyani and Karaharapriya was commendable. KVG and Ananthakrishnan were good.

The disappointing part was that hardly 100 members would have attended the concert. I am surprised. I am sure if it would have any of the front ranking artists the music lovers would have attended in spite of the weather. Yes i do agree that chilly winds has been troubling the MUmbaikars for the past two weeks. But the temperature in the auditorium was rising as BMK started his concert. Surely a treat for a person like who hardly gets to attend a concert becuase of my work. But when i did it was a awesome. Those who didn't come, you guys just missed it.... :)

Thnks Ragjay....i was doubtful...somebody in the audience told me and hence took a note...I haven't heard the krithi and the ragam before...and the tiruvembai since 'empavai' came in the charanam, thought it was tirupavai...:)

I agree with Sankarabharanam on almost all points. Started very well with a brilliant Harikambhoji but seem to be losing some steam in Purvi Kalyani although the alaapana had some nice prayogas around Dhaivatham. NIlambari was sung with great depth but Bhavapriya was once again hurried and breathless...More than made up with the main piece though.

Srikanth's bowinig was sweet and Anathakrishnan's tone was very pleasasnt, helped by a very nice sound system. His nadais sround the idam were really nice and followed it up with an excellent Tisram while KVG played some nice koraippus.

I really like the ambience at Shanmukha - comfortable seats with a good view of the stage. And I thought the crowd was not much smaller than the typical afternoon concert at the Academy. People did trickle out after the purvi kalyani though...
