Vid Sanjay Subramaniam - Vocal
Vid S Varadarajan -Violin
Vid Arun Prakash - Mridangam
Vid Guru Prasanna - Kanjira
What a awsome concert it was. Complete in all aspects. Sanjay never disappoints his fans. What an applause he got for every song!! The auditorium was overflowing with people sitting on the aisles in balcony, and few standing..
Complete song list will follow later, i couldn't resist posting this message!!
There was malayamarutam, reetigowlai - nannu vidachi, Ranjani Niranjai in Ranjani, sankarabharanam - shankaracharyam of subburama dikshitar (not very often heared - one of my favoritues from SSI & MSS), and the piece of the day "RTP in Jaunpuri"... Pallavi lines eppo varuvaro endan kali teera - in rupaka taalam.

1. I went a bit late when there was a swaram going on. It is probably a kamboji.
2. Telisi Rama chandra - purna chandrika (S)
3. Manasa Yethula - malayamarutham (RNS) - Thyagaraja
N @ kalilo rajasa
4. Ranjanl niranjani - ranjani - GNB - (R)
5. Nannu Vidachi - Reethigowla - Thyagaraja
6. Sankaracharyam - sankarabaranam - (R [12,10],N,S,T)
N @ parama gnana
T- someone can explain the techniques.
7. sitham irangathenil velaya (or ethaya ) - Sahana
8. RTP Jounpuri - pallavi Yeppa varuvaro enthan kali theeravay popularised by MMI
- and he completed the RTP with the song's anupallavi and last charanam of the song
amidst the tundering applause.
9. Speech... I had to leave due to rain and long distance travel.
It was a great concert. And I realised how the magnitude/interest of the crowd can motivate artists to perform to their full potential in both TMK and
Sanjay's concerts. Jonpuri RTP was the best of today's concert and then comes the Sankarabaranam raga alapana. But actaully everything was great.
An old man sitting next to me was mesmerised completely by the "manasa" and ranjanai niranjani". Varadarajan was at his best too.
At times I found him doing what Sanjay said in his interview (on a question regarding accompanists) like just making that sa humming (with violin)
during the alapana. It was wonderful. Defintely entho audience at Jayanagar 3 block and a huge hall.
RTP in jonpuri .. a big surprise. A couple next to me left when thanam started instead of the song , as they were expecting the song eppo varu varo
(eppo varumo that song ). They missed it , he had ended the RTP with that song , instead of the usual ragamalika swaram.

Amazing.... It seems like it would be difficult to do a thanam in Jaunpuri... at leastWow Jaunpuri...Sanjay is really freaking out on HM ragas
it seems quite limited in scope in the CM format. Does anyone know/could anyone
point me to differences/similarities between CM Jaunpuri (as heard in the popular
songs like Eppo Varuvaro or Sapashyat Kousalya) and the HM version? Thanks.
The only other elaborate manodharma I have heard in this raga was as part of a
viruttam in a TMK concert -- that was pretty superb too.

Vijay,
Missed you at this concert, for sure. It was richer than the usually sumptuous fare that you get in Sanjay's concerts. I was expecting an RTP after his singing of the rAga in SankarAbharaNam and SankarAcAryam followed. JOnpuri caught me by surprise and the pallavi line was 'eppO varuvArO?' , and that was not all. It flowed into the kruti and MMI would have been mighty proud of what we heard this evening. To me, it seemed as though a cataract of a pallavi slowed down and flowed smoothly into the song and the effect was soothing. Suddenly, ragamAlikA pallavis seemed lacklustre, compared to the effect of this . Sanjay's imagination found many venues in this concert. The tukkaDa part was anything but light tiffin. A swAti bhajan, an MDR tillanA and more.
Personally, I considered it a special treat. Sorry Vijay and others that you had to miss this. Well, when you hear such grand performances from Sanjay or anyone else for that matter, remember that I am soon returning home, leaving behind the rich pasture of 'live' CM...
Varadarajan and Arunprakash did their usual bit in being the most compatible accompanists Sanjay can have. Guruprasad on the kanjira was good too, though the sound was a bit loud...

Well. I don't know what to say. I'm feeling soooo.. jealous. I'd to leave half-way through the kutcheri for some wedding :/ I could stay only till Shankarabharanam. Of course, even the half-concert I attended was highly satisfying, but to miss an RTP in Jonpuri...
His Bageshri RTP is still ringing in my ears. He does such a wonderful job with his RTPs...

s_hari,
The feast was rich and varied that you had one good thing coming after another. Yes, the svarams for telisi rAma cintana were a spontaneous outpour. By the way, it was a jOnpuri RTPas you stated before.
engum niRaindirukkum is in kuRinji, I thought. NavarOj, is it? It sings of kapAli and if it is a film song, most probably a Papanasam Sivan song. It was a signature piece during the season for him...

I didn't know MDR had composed a thillana in Sindhu Bhairavi. Is there any available recording?
Mali has tried his hand at Jaunpuri as well: http://sangeethamshare.org/mpmohan/Sri. ... -concerts/
(Download concert 3, held in Bangalore with TNK on the violin).

How do you dress up, dignify or otherwise lend gravitas to an RTP in Jonpuri?rajaglan wrote:..... he had ended the RTP with that song , instead of the usual ragamalika swaram.
Certainly swarams in ghana raga panchakam isn't going to cut it. One could suggest plumbing lower depths with Basant Bahar but fortunately for us the descendants of The Great King have an unbreakable patent on that raga. And Megh Malhar seems to be the personal property, at least as of today, of the Dueling Abhangists.
All I can say is: Thank God for small mercies!

Generally, ragas like Jaunpuri have been relegated and have been floundering in 'tukkada' status. But, after the masterly RTP treatment of Sanjay yesterday, it is as if Jaunpuri is thumping its chest and saying, 'See, I belong up there too'. Full credit to creative artists like Sanjay who venture to elevate such lilting ragas to RTP levels and produce a wholesome and sumptuous fare.
Sanjay was indeed in his elements, inspired and pumped up. His concert was a kind of tribute to GNB, MM and MDR and brought memories of these great artists.
'Kandu Dhanyanade Nanu' (Behag) is Kamalesha Vitthala's composition. Palghat Narayanaswami used to sing this in his inimitable style.

Oh Yes it was a Superb Concert- Sanjay is so innovative every time. I had attended around 8 concerts in December Chennai Season and cannot remember him repeating even in yesterdays Kutcheri , Had heard Shankarabharanam Swara Raga Sudha and here we had Shankaracharyam. This is the first time I hear him render a Hindi Bhajan and am floored with his proper and clear ( no southy accent ) Hindi Pronounciation Of course The song itself is such a melodious composiition.

Hmm...no Kiravani so far...and I've attended a few concerts of his...
Arasi both of us are going to be missing the concert action in the months ahead but I am happy you are taking in so much music before you leave...
I too will picth in my lot with those cheering Sanjay's choice of HM ragas. I have been demanding greater space to "HM ragas" for a while. Many "CM ragas" have been successfully borrowed by Hindustani artistes and I see no reason why we should not do the same, as long as the treatment is CM in character (and needless to say, in moderation)...I feel that artistes like TNS, NSG and Sanjay somehow manage to achieve this...Basant Bahaar, Megh Malhar, Multani, Darbari...bring em on! Deekshitar is hard act to follow but no harm in trying!
BTW, I remember reading in Sanjay's interview, about his being unimpressed with HM...and suddenly you have all these RTPs in HM ragas...even the MMG Neraval in his KGS concert seemed to be in debt to distinctly HM ideas (halts on Nishadam for instance) - it was one of the best neravals I have heard in recent times...

I am a tad amused by some of the forum's regulars musing on whether Sanjay has given Kiravani serious attention. With his repertoire, it would have been a huge surprise had he not done so. I am happy to report I have heard him sing Kiravani on several occasions, including a massive RTP in Australia some years ago, which I have seen on video. Not sure about the just concluded music season, but in previous seasons, he has rendered "Kalikiyunde" and "Innamum Sandeha Padalaamo" on a fairly regular basis.

May god bless Bilahari for fishing it out...even if I remain a little concerned about the rightness of my picking it up. But who knows when a RTP in Jaunpuri will come next.
This is Indian music at one of its loftiest intepretative summits. I have been listening to Jaunpuri for the last hour...Sanjay and BGAK in turn. BGAK's version is undoubtedly more melodious and haunting but is no match for the brilliance of Sanjay's intellect. I am not competent to comment on the grammar but to me he not only succeeds in steering clear of the Darbaris, Natabhairavis and Nagagandharis (which I am reluctant to say about Bade!) but does so with so much elan...every phrase keeps you guessing...and once again a uniquely Carnatic flavour...in fact the alaapana suggests more than a hint of Mali's genius and I wouldn't be suprised if Sanjay's template was developed more around the flautist's intepretation than Bade's...
Having said all that, it was Khan saheb who got me all choked up...but the head and the heart are two different animals!
