Ravi asked me to post one of my dance compositions. Here is the Shiva Panchakshara sthotram by Adi Sankara.

I have not composed the lyrics but merely set the swaras in Khada Chapu. My wife, Sangeetha, has tuned the lyrics. The jathis were set by Smt Hamsa Venkat - who has also danced to this piece a few times.

Each different stanza begins with the aksharas (letters or syllables) Na Ma Shi Va Ya. Hence, the ragas chosen also have names that start with these aksharas.

Vocal - Sangeetha Ayyar
Synthesizer - Mohan Ayyar
Mrudangam - Bala Sankar
Tabla - Kishan Jeyendran
Recorded in 2004.

Nice piece Mohan. Sangeetha has rendered it nicely.Nicely tuned. All the rAgas chosen are of lighter variety leaning towards hindUstAni. The rAgas chosen are of course different from what MSS sung them in. I it the ciTTeswaras that you have composed? They have come out well. keep it up.

Thanks DrS. Yes the swaras and choice of ragas (nattai, madhuvanti, shivaranjani, valaji and yamunakalyani) are by me.

Mohan,
LOVELY! Absolutely lively as well!
I had heard this composition first presented for a dance item in a mOhiniAttam performance during the Natyanjali 2004. It was sung in the sOpAnam style (thanks to Chembai and kulkarni sa'ab, I actually know what that is now!) to suit the dance form. This is IMO way better and is obviously for B'Natyam.
Can you explain why you call this panchAkshara mAlikA? Before I heard it, I assumed that you had chosen rAgAs that had 5 aksharAms in their names...but that was not the case.
Ravi

BTW, have you set to music (dance or otherwise) other slOkams?

Yes - it was done in Bharata Natyam with a male and female dancer dancing as Shiva and Parvathi. The Jathis were danced by Shiva and the Swaras by Parvathi. In another recording we have the jathis just spoken by a male (not in the tune) but I like this version better. Sorry I don't have the video.

I called it Panchaksharamalika since the five ragas start with the syllables Na, Ma, Shi, Va and Ya (corresponding to the 5 stanzas of the sloka). Maybe this is not an appropriate name.

I haven't set any other slokas but have done Eru Mayil in Ragamalika. This hasn't been recorded yet but is being performed for a arangetram in July. Most of my other compositions are just swara based items for dance. I'll see what I can upload over the weekend.

Mohan,
I enjoyed listening to 'mohana sangItam' (both the pieces). Your playing is soothing and emotive. Sangeetha has a sweet and expressive voice. Wish I could see her dance too...

Thanks Janani & Arasi. Videos are not currently available but there are some photos in the gallery at www.samskritidance.com

Unfortunately neither Sangeetha or I dance.

I didn't think you danced. I got an impression by reading a post on the forum that you choreograph besides creating music--and that Sangeetha dances...

I also tried both the links and it keeps on coming as error. May be it is the wrong site given. Could you kindly look it up again. I am also curious to hear the Shiva Panchaksharam done for dance. Thanks.

I hope that the (new) listeners also note the care and imagination exercised by Mohan in the choice of the rAgas (explained in post 10)!
