Beautiful concert. all pieces were presented very well. AlApanais were presented amazingly. The kalpitam and manodarmam were both exceptional. The pieces chosen were quite rare. The accompanists were very good.

It was indeed a very nice concert. The Varali and Mukhari Alapanais and Krithi rendition were done beautifully. The Varali Swarams had quite visible shades of TNK Mama's style. The Pancharathna-Raga based Tanam was quite nice as well. Remember reading that Sanjay had done a similar thing in the season. And also good to hear a weighty Krithi, not often heard these days, for main.

Thanam in ghana ragam is basically a practice the veena players adapt;I think it is the convention in veena playing. May be some veena artist can explain it.Thanks

I understand before ariyakudi period, the concerts did not have format and so they started the concert with tanams in ghana ragam. But I was not aware veena artists also play this... But How does it fit here.. The raga taken for elaboration is Shankarabharanam. It is not an RTP with these ghana ragas forming a part of raga bedam. Then how does it fit here?

Also in RTP, is it necessary that the ragams used in tanam should be used in pallavi also??

I wish I'd been there.

I've seen this man accompany but once, and I was very impressed, and told him that I wanted to see his solo concert.

He modestly responded as if it was unlikely to happen soon.

I'm delighted to see that it has happened, and hope not to miss the next one.

Well, Ragamalika Tanams are quite popular always, more so among the instrumentalists. Have seen TNK Mama do it more than once. Bharath can explain better :) And no, it is not binding that all Ragams used in Tanam must be used in Pallavi. The Pallavi lec dem at Ragasudha by TNS last week covered a wide range of Pallavi structures and styles.

GRS,

You are right,

Though the platform is the same, it is a seperate "Jamakalam" spread (and a colorful one at that) that has been provided for RK Sriramkumar ! I never knew that Anirudh Athreya has since started wearing glasses. But it looks nice on him as he keenly observes RKS like a fielder concentrating on the batsman from forward short leg, his right hand ready in anticipation to grab the catch :)

What I did find very interesting was that the Tambura has a seperate mike !!

Oh, wow, cienu, definitely missed the mic for the tambura. Never seen that arrangement before. Was the drone audible to the audience? SSI used to do ghana raga thanams as well. He has done a thorough exposition in an RTP in Kedaragowla in a 1960's concert. I do wonder why people started using the ghana ragas for thanam. How did that come about?

Didn't take appreciable notes. Shall try to come up with a post anyway. A little held up these days.

The jamakALams were spread in no particular fashion. There were 3 jamakALams spread in such a fashion only for symmetric reasons and nothing else. [:)]

about separate mic for the tamburA, Sri Shriram Kumar insisted on one. The volume level was kept in accordance to the volume levels of the other microphones.

About a tAnam for the main kriti (with a rAgamAlikA or otherwise), it is a regular practice among vainikAs. Some vocalists (esp Smt R Vedavalli) do it as well.

About Sathej's reference to TNK concerts...

about the Sri RK Shriram Kumar concert, to add more...
Each song was carefully chosen and played. The rarity of these songs in concerts was probably the reason to choose them. And very beautiful selection of ragams also. Also, i must add that the tani Sri Arun Prakash and Sri Anirudh played was exceptional and fitting for the choice of the main.

An exceptional demonstration of ghana raga thanam by TNK and MC:

I can't find the SSI-LGJ-UKS RTP in Kedaragowla on Sangeethapriya, although I'd downloaded the concert from there. One of the best RTP's I've ever heard.
