Varalakshmi, a disciple of DKJ, has come back to concert platform after a
long absence, traceable to her doctotoral pursuit. Intervening years have added weight to her voice and she presented the programme with full vigour , reminiscent of the programme of her mentor. Song selections have been good . Song of Sankaradas Swamigal made us go down the memry lane of the handling of kriti by Madurai Mani Iyer. A distinctive feature was rendition of kriti of Thanjavur Sankara Iyer, which was packed with swaras of various rhythmic pattern, exploring various dimensions of Todi Though this was different from Sankara Iyer's rendition of the same kriti a few days back at Nada Inbam , the change in the neraval passage and the 'Kanakku' did not per se devalue the weight of the kriti .
Percussion support and Thani especially by Balaji was of a high standard

One has to concede the artiste the right to choose the neraval line and the kalpana swaras. While Sankara Iyer chose the line "Engum Niraindavanai Elloraiyum Kappavanai", Varalakshmi chose the line "Mangalamana Maruthiyai Hanumathodi Padi." Except for the perception that the swaras were a trifle long and kanakku based, in my personal view ,the presentation of the song as the centre piece was quite good.
