dear balchand, a nishadanthya raga is a raga that only goes upto Nishadham.
there are also daivathanthya ragas which stop at Dhaivatham.

an example of a nishadanthya ragam is : cittha ranjani, janyam in karahara priya.

aro: s r g m p d n , ava: n d p m g r s.

an example of dhaivathanthya raga is: kurunji, janyam in shankarabharanam

aro: s n s r g m p d , ava: d p m g r s n s.

there also ragams that are nishadanthya in the aro and dhaivathanthya in the ava, or the opposite ( if i'm not wrong).

hope this info helps.

hi samrakshana, thanks for the reply, so in such a raga, one would not go to tara or mantra stayi, is it?

Dear Mr.Bala, you're correct in saying that you won't go to any higher octaves of that particular scale.

Interesting topic. Can we also have similar 'arambha' ragas? I mean, for e.g., 'Rishabharambha' raga, that would start with Ri and go upto the higher Sa and come down only upto Ri.

And which other ragas have similar antya feature?
