kalAkruthi , the sabha that got started 13 years back at a place in chetpet inaugrated by vidushi Smt VEdavalli then in 1995 .For about a decade they moved to kalyAna mantapam at egmore graciously given by Shri arusuvai natarAjan. Since the beginning of this year , they did not have any place to conduct concerts, the sabha seceretary approached his holiness jayendra swamigal ,who readily gave shankarAlayam which is a new hall built at the same place in chetput where they had started. Bravo the sabha did not die, thanks to the magnanimity of kanchi swamigal.

The concert was typically an unlucky one for me . Start of 6 pm was postponed to 6:15 pm with a very nice krithi invocation in shankarAbharanam by one of the office bearers. Smt Vedavalli's husband shri santhAnam(chief guest to inaugrate the concert) spoke without preperation and went on for another 20 minutes. Unluckily the mridangist had a train to catch and hence the concert was for mere 1 hour and 50 minutes.

nAttai was excellent most appealing in swaras. The neraval of kalyANi was very detailed and was very good . SAveri was sung in a vilambakAlam mode and was just good, perhaps there was just too much of echo. The day's best was suryaprakAsh's 21 minute bhairavi :)alApanai, he went all out and was outstanding. The krithi was connecting Adi shankarA , varanasi and gangA and I never knew pApanAsam sivan penned such an excellent krithi in sanskrit. There was a nice line in anupallavi annapoornEshri where suryaprakAsh appeared to start a neraval but dodged :( and went straight to swaras. The bhairavi swaras were more in line like madurai somu's, long cycles of short burst mode with an excellent support by the mridangist.

The viruththam was very long , the behAg and sindhubhairavi was very detailed , he looping back in one go and landing at oruthi maganAi was aesthetically excellent . The basant bahAr tillAnA has been rendered so brilliantly by santhAnam , and I am yet to hear any musician matching the same. There was just one mmi no at the end eppa varuvAro , a disappointment more in terms that there was no mmi no in front.

Smt MeerA played more squeakily most of the time , her returns were just ok. Liked vaidyanAthan's support the only disappointment was the train that he had to catch which ate the concert . I wish the performers are very communicative in telling upfront that they have a train to catch in turn not reducing 30 minutes of concert.

Can someone tell me who has sung in past or present this sivan's brilliant krithi in sanskrit?

Thank you Rajesh for the review. .
I have heard Suryaprakash singing a lovely bhairavi AlApanA too for koluvaiyunnADe, but I have not heard this Sivan's sanskrit number at all. The problem comes when the audience expects him to sing several MMI krutis (including you! He did sing eppO varuvArO). You relished the Sivan song, and that goes to illustrate what I mean. Suryaprakash is capable of going outside the realm of what is expected of him. His imagination is rich and he is capable of tackling any unknown kruti and his feeling for sAhityA is not to be forgotten. His viLamba kAla singing is a welcome thing too. Many expect only a briskly rendered fare from him. He has that hurdle to overcome!
Let alone your being short-changed, Suryaprakash comes across this 'time stricture' once too often--I mean, several of his concerts get curtailed for one reason or the other. We already have several 'traditions' which are part of a concert--like late starts and lOOOng speeches. Suryaprakash seems to have a knack for attracting these unwanted elements more than some others. Let alone the time slot he is given. And a mrudangist who had to catch a train too, this time!
What this artiste needs is more luck. There are several others out there who do not possess nearly as much talent as he does, and yet are doing better than he does. As you once remarked, his imagination needs more room than an often curtailed less-than-two hour slot that he ends up with.

Before you protest, yes, I like hearing MMI masterpieces from him too, but unlike me and even you, there are those out there who want nothing but a replica of an MMI concert from him every time!

In 90% of the concerts I've attended at this venue, someone was in a hurry to reach the station!

Sri Viswanatham Bhaje was popularised by Voleti and Nedunuri. Though Sri Nedunuri has sung many of the tamil compositions of Sivan, I have heard Sri Voleti sing only Sri Viswantham and another kriti in Punnagavarali.
MLV has sung this kriti too often.
Sri Nedunuri had sung a fabulous Bhairavi alapana followed by this kriti in the Academy in the late 80s (with Palghat Raghu and MC)
