Would appreciate a translation of this Gopalakrishna Bharati krithi. Lakshman Sir has posted the lyrics in the GKB thread which I reproduce here. Thanks in advance to Ravi, arasi, Rajani etc! :)

Prashant,

Here you go:

This composition is structured in the format of a statement in the pallavi, and qualifications in the anupallavi and caraNams – the AP here has the description of ‘who’, and the caraNams answer the ‘why’.

P: sivalOka nAthanaik kaNdu sEvittiDuvOm vArIr

In the pallavi, as nandan, SrI GKB exhorts all of us to go to cidambaram. He says, “Come (vArIr)! Let us feast our eyes (kaNDu) on the Lord (nAthani) of SivalOka, and offer our prayers (sEvittiDuvOm).â€

rs,
kAnal jalam - mirage

I am rather confused by the words 'tEnum pAlum pOlE' - how they fit in the context.
As regards 'tEraDi' - generally, ratha (tEr) is situated on the East Mada street facing the Sannidhi. Standing at the foot of the ratha, it is possible to have the darSan of the gOpura and not the Lord.
It is possible that this kRti does not refer to Chidambaram because, Nataraja is facing South in the interior maNTapa. Therefore, it might refer to some other temple or the original mUlavar of Chidambaram.

tEnum pAlum pOla: unless it has other references--
They blend perfectly, they are both sweet--so, to think of you (sweet) and worship you with my eyes too--doubly sweet.

tEnum - pAlum: I see the reference as 'SammA and parvAnA' - they belong together, and must seek each other out.

I think the Lord is the ever-sweet tEn, and the rest of us are like the colloidal pAl - a mixture of so many different things!

VGV,

Thanks for the kAnal jalam correction - will edit my post.

No clue about tEraDi vAyil - you could be right, and this maybe in reference to the temple in the 'nandi vilagina Ur' (tiruppungUr?) and not cidambaram, or it could be the SivalOka tyAgarAja temple at acalapuram/sIrgAzhI - no clue if nandan went to sIrgAzhi for darSan - it is not that far from cidambaram, is it?

rs,
At chidambaram, there is an original temple where the Siva linga is called 'tirumUlattAnamuDaiyAr'. patanjali and vyAghra pAda worshipped this Lord. It is only after that Nataraja Temple seems to have come up.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chidambara ... er_shrines

Persons like GKB would not place words in the kriti just for prAsa anuprAsa sake. There must be some meaning as to why he is referring to 'tEraDi'. At Chidambaram, tEraDi is not very far, because the Sannidhi street is very short. Therefore, I wonder why he says 'tEraDi' - why not in the temple itself? May be as you said sIrgAzhi, or tiruppungur. But 'tEraDi' still puzzles me because, if it refers to Nanda, then he could come upto the Temple Gopuram rather standing at tEraDi.

Arasi,
I find such very innocuous words placed in the Thyagaraja Kritis also and I keep breaking my head over such words - may be it is my 'pazhakka dOsham' - jokingly.

In the song 'vazhi maraittirukkudE.' he sings 'tErdiyil ninRu darisittAlum pOddum,kOvil varamAttEn'.
He also sings 'pAvipparaiyan inda Uril vandum'.
To which temple these refer to then?

P: vazhi maraittirukkudE malaipOlE oru mADu paDuttirukkudE
A: pAvip-paraiyaninda Uril vandum ivan (innum) pAvam tIrEnO
pAdattil shErEnO ErEnO shivalOka nAthA
C: tEraDiyil ninru darishittAlum pOdum kOvil vara mATTEn ayyE
OraDi vilaginAl pOdum ingE ninru uTrup-pArkka shaTrE vilagAdO mADu

punarvasu,
Thanks for your input. Then this song - Siva lOka nAtanai - would refer to 'tiruppungur' - the temple to which 'vazhi maRaittirukkudE' refers. And also, this might be forming part of Nandanar charitram.
Thanks for clearing my doubt.

Ravi, that is a beautiful translation.

There are some minor differences in the version sung by MMDandapani Desikar
aRivukku aRivai maRanthOm

pAsamakala vazi tEDAmal

kaRpithamAyA prapanjchamithai

Hello Rajani!
Thanks for the link. Do iI see it right? Along with t Nandi, the dvajasthambha has also been constructed to align with him.

Is the song taDAgam onRuNDAkkinAr gaNa nAyakar in mOhanam about this shrine?

Rajani! Thanks!

Thanks for the lovely link - so the song was about SivalOkanAthar of tiruppungUr...(nandi vilagina Ur)!

MMD's version doesn't change the meaning much!

Interesting to note that the ambAL in this temple is called cokkanAyakI or soundaranAyaki - reminds of madurai and cokkanAthar/sundarESwarar!

arasi,
what is 'varikkal'? I could not find the word.
Poor Devayani - She should have retorted, "Saas bhI kabhi bahu thI - is not applicable to you; therefore, don't taunt me like that".

vari is stripe, so, striped stone among plain ones--which naturally appealed to her as a pleasant past time, I don't blame her!
