Thanks Hari
Look forward to your review. Just a few fillers till then.
Came in when Nirajakshi Kamakshi had started.
This was truly a magnificient concert in true Sanjay style.
I was guessing that today there would be an RTP in a Hindustani Raga and Sanjay did not disappoint. What a wonderful Bageshri
Varadarajan followed Sanjay like a shadow. They are a made for each other combo.
The tani of Neyveli Venkatesh and Guru Prasanna was fantastic (after Bowli).
Over to Hari once again

Thanks Hari for the list.
It was a brilliant concert indeed. How well Sanjay chose the compositions and kept the interest alive till the end? It was packed audience and not many left even though the concert went past the regular closing time.
Begada was the first raga exposition and was truly outstanding. The sangatis were very imaginative and some of the Tarastayi gandara phrases were brilliant. Hindola ragam was also dealt very well. There was lot of calmness in the way the ragam was rendered suiting the mood of the keertanam, Nirajakshi Kamakshi.
I don’t think Sanjay did good justice to Kalyani ragam. It lacked spontaneity (This is mainly in comparison to his delineation of Begada and Hindola ragams). The sruti also went off in a couple of places. However the keertanam and the swara patterns were excellent.
Bouli was an excellent selection. The way he handled the ragam was extremely good. The pauses between the sangatis were noteworthy. It gave us time to enjoy each and every phrase. Whether it was the ragam, keertanam, nereval or the swara for this piece, there was calmness throughout.
Saravanabhava was a good filler before the RTP. Bageyshri Ragam and tanam were also very good.
One could clearly notice that Sanjay was occasionally trying to show some of the Semmangudi style in the concert tonight (This music festival is part of the Birth Centenarry celebrations of Sangita Kalanidhi Sri Semmangudi S Srinivasier).
Varadarajan played very well throughout. His Begada ragam could not come any where close to Sanjay’s delineation. But Varadarajan stole the show in the Kalyani ragam. He deserves special kudos for the way he handled the ragam. His ragam delineation had all the weighty phrases and the associated Bhavam. I think it was his turn to outshine Sanjay here!!! His Bageyshri ragam and tanam also needs a special mention here.
Neyvelli Venkatesh played very well. His accompaniment to the compositions seemed to be ok but he does extremely well to bring out classic patterns during the pauses in between pallavi, Anupallavi and charanams. Tani avartanam by him and Guruprasanna was very competent. There was a lot of applause for both of them during their individual turns.

ceinu - here are my comments..
arasi madam - i corrected the typo in artist's name.
As i wrote in summary, a typical Sanjay concert. It had everything what one can expect..To me, it was mixed of new compositions, and time tested ones.. I heard Chakravakam varnam, sri keerthana, PD keerthana in kalyani, nanda tanaya govinda for first time, and rest were familiar.
1. Varnam - sung in chauka kalam, with brief raga outline; and included 2nd kaalam also.
2. Sri - the keerthana had a nice chittaswaram, and sanjay announced the composer name at end of song. There was swara sahitya also for chittaswalram.
3. Begada alapana was very nice. Improvisation was within limits, and most of the time while ending a sangathi - there was a typical begada pidi. The brigas were very good, and they fell in place even in tara sthyai. Varadarajan's reply was not very improvized, it was a classical begada... No compliants - it was very cool. Sanjay sang about 4 one avarthanam swaras, and moved onto mutli avarthana swaras. He concluded swara kalpana with second speed swaras for about 2 avarthanas.
4. Hindolam alapana was about 6 minutes, and was leisurely paced matching with mood of keerthana which followed. The keerthana was also in chowka kalam, he included chitta swaram also. But, no neraval or swara kalpana for this song.
5. In kalyani alapana - it was very classical, brigas were good too. He didn't overdo anywhere. While ending the raga, he almost ended, just when everyone was about to clap, he sang another sanchari through the scale to windup! In the swaras, while ending korvai, sanjay included kanda nadai and 2nd kala kandam also. Varadarajan reproduced the korvai almost as is. Brilliant accompaniment.
6. Bowli raga was rendered well too, as noted by sesha - there was enough vishranti to enjoy the alapana. The keerthana was also in chowka kalam.
7. Bagesri RTP - i didn't expect it - it is very predictable though in a sanjay concert...I was listening to his december kalarasana concert - and this RTP, with same pallavi lines just last week!! A vivadi raga RTP would have been even better. There was no trikalam or ragamalika swaras. During swara singning, sanjay used different wording to end his avarthanam - like
......ka va va;
..... muruga va va;
.....pazhani malai muruga;
.....then pazhani murugan etc
varadarajan followed accordingly..
In kalarasana, sanjay sang ragamalika swara - ending in varalai swara - and switching to kaa vaa vaa. Here, he sang a PD song in bagesri itself.
8. To compensate for raga malika swara, sanjay sang a nice viruttam.. Same lines i heard just last month in a private chamber concert. The ragas used here were rakthi ragas - kambodhi, varali, sahana - ending with jounpuri. The ragas were truly classical - and to hear those ragas in virutham is very special.
9. He ended the concert with SSI special - sapasya kausalya; and a adum chitambaramo, then mangalam.
10. As noted by Shesha - SSI elements were present; Om Saravana bhava, bowli keerthana as main; and sapasya kausalya...And sanjay didn't indulge in too much kanakku either!!
