The Global Carnatic Music Association (GCMA), founded by musicians Sudha Raghunathan and K.N.Shashikiran, is organizing the first ever 100-hour concert in the history of Carnatic music, from the 31st of July to the 4th of August. This concert will be a garland of hundred 1-hour concerts, as a tribute to the doyen of Carnatic music, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, whose birth centenary fell on the 25th of July.

The GCMA was founded in 2007 with the aim of bringing together the Carnatic music fraternity across the world. It provides a common platform for musicians and artistes to share their experiences, discuss common issues and sharpen their skills.

Since its inception, the GCMA has been coming up with innovative programs, which have received overwhelming response from musicians and rasikas alike. Last year, the association organized the hugely popular “Coffee with Celebrityâ€

Of course rasikas will be there for the famous names at prime time slot, the not so famous, youngsters, and NRI's will have to scramble to invite their family and friends to come listen.

All the best in setting the record.

Well. Publicity for the Organisers. And the satisfaction of participation to many . What else? Perhaps the same songs will be sung again and again.

If someone has the time, it sounds like a great time will be had, a weekend full of music. May be one will get completely saturated at the end. One does not need to attend the majority of the 100 hours. It is like a buffet, you get to sample some and settle down for the ones you like. It is sort of like Lollapalooza in the U.S. where It is over three days, morning till night on multiple simultaneous stages ( they do take a break for the night ). Definitely, this format is not for everybody.

Best wishes to the organizers, artists and the rasikas.

You are right.

I am getting too grumpy in my old age, and will delete my previous post!

If people enjoy, then that is surely enough.

For one thing, we have to worry about start time (IST) to the very beginning of the 100 hour concert alone :D

I think it is a great idea. YagnAs used to (and still do) go on for days on end. Gandhi had his spinning yagnAs when spinning yarn on the wheel went on all day--many taking part in it. The locals will drift in and out and it gave them an idea about khadi (hand spun, hand woven cloth which meant self-sufficiency in the villages).
It is a bit like the season too. The non-ticketed programs in the mornings bring in a cross-section of chennaites who are interested in music. Those who come early leave after some time, but there are others who drift in. It is a good way to propogate CM, I think.
It is really an opportunity for the rasikAs too. It is the organizers who have a long haul!
As VK pointed out, rasikAs get to sample the music of up-coming artistes (and can do it for an hour instead of sitting through a whole concert of of theirs). It is the same with established singers. We tend to miss out on listening to some, for some reason or other, and this again is an opportunity to catch up with them.
This event also has the momentum and atmosphere of a season (an abridged one).
Waiting for reviews...

I hope this will be recorded and released by Carnatica, and that someone will review these concerts on the forum. Are there any previous records available of TNS at the keyboard?

I had the misfortune of listening to the CD that tkb mentions; I did not get past the varnam. My fault perhaps. I will try and attend his live concert. Maybe the recording was bad. ;-)

I participated in the Global Music Association for the past couple of days and already about forty hours of continous concerts has been accomplished successfully. The artists are able to sing in a relaxed state to the rasikas heart content and everybody is in a state of joy. Quality food including breakfast, lunch has been arranged for everyone. Even there is a rest room where anybody feels tired can take rest anytime. There are lot of variety of songs and rasikas are able to listen according to their tastes. It is truly a herculean task and Shashikiran stays there continuously day and night for all the concerts. What Shashikiran needs is more and more rasikas to attend in large numbers for all the pains and efforts he is taking. There is no ego and it is very homely and like a family function. Shashi also gave a prize of cash Rs. 1000 for a rasika who had continuously stayed for 24 hours listening to the concerts. It is a rare opportunity for all carnatic music lovers who wish to listen to carnatic music continuously. The atmosphere at Thyagaraja Vidwat Samajam is also divine.

Just as expected, the event has appealed to many rasikAs. Nice to hear from them. Shashikiran is an energetic, hard-working organizer.

Nivedita, would like to listen to you and to others as samples of this marathon, if possible.
Good luck with your singing!

Majority of the rasikas are not fortunate to be present at the 100 hr program, but will feel blessed if the musicians and the organizers will share some of the selected songs for their listening too.

It has been one of the best week ends i have ever had in my life as i was attending the 100 hr Marathon concert effort of GCMA. Even though i would have spent just around 10 - 14 hrs in all from the 31st Jul till now, I have had the oppurtunity to listen to some quality music with artists singing / performing with great interest. The concept of Music Therapy does work, i understand from few rasikas who has been there for over 60 - 65 hours till now. The highlight to me of them all was the son of Sri Palghat Sriram who sang for may be 20 mts but stole the hearts of every one present. A real prodigy in all terms and the interesting thing is apart from that 20 mts minutes on stage, just Childish as he should be, he was playing around the venue not giving even a clue that he is a child with such a great talent!

The attendance yesterday and day before was good and as Mr. Sashikiran mentioned this effort of the musicians and the rasikas probably touched the heart of rain god who was kind to shower his blessings with real good rain from the evening of yesterday. It was indeed a great treat to the rasikas yesterday evening to listen to Sri TVG, Sri M Chandrasekaran, Sri VV Subramaniam & Kum Kanyakumari. Speacial mention to be made the for the quality of audio system provided by Kannan Audios with their staff present all through out, making it a pleasant experience for the rasikas to listen to the wonderful music. In my opinion this is indeed a success for GCMA in bringing together so many artists to perform for a cause so willingly. I am sure its volunteers who have been working non-stop, the sponsors, and most the rasikas who have been there for long hours are to be appreciated for their efforts and look forward to more such concepts.

I have given the link for Sathya's performance in the Kutcheri eviews & recording section of this forum.

Sri Srumushanam Raja Rao gave a really nice concert last night. Was not aware he could sing so well. One could easily have concluded that he is a senior vocal vidwan, except it was past midnight :-)

The valedictory function was short and sweet. Shri. N.Murali, and Kovai Krishna Sweets Murali and Directore Mr.Vasanth spoke highly about the herculean task in organising such an event of great magnitude. Sudha Raghunathan compered the function and K.N.Sashikiran proposed vote of thanks in a very sincere and honest manner not leaving out anyone.

Before that Sudhaji gave an excellent performance with Shobillu, Nagumomu and Shanthi Nilava Vendum to the accompaniment of RKS, Murugaboopathy and Guruprasad.

After this many artistes like Sowmya, Shashikiran etc joined sudha in finishing off with Geetartamu in Surati for which Mannargudi Eswaran sir also joined.

It was really a great effort by Shashi and Co.,
