'jalaja bandhuvumiha...' is the anupallavi. The padam starts as 'alarshara paritApam colvatinnu...' and is set in Mishra Chapu, not Adi.s_hari wrote:9. jalaja bandu - surati - adi 2 kalai -swati tirunaal
Once again, a start from the anupallavi 'yOgijAta hRdayAbja sadanA...'. The raga is Nadanamakriya and the pallavi is 'jagadIsha! pancashara sUdana...'s_hari wrote:11. yogijada brudaya - nadanamakrishna - adi 2 kalai
bhujaga shAyino, meaning reclining on the serpent.s_hari wrote:13. bujagasayino - yadukulakambodi - mangalam - swati tirunaal

ramanathan sir - thank you much for your corrections. I made the changes
Ram wanted to hear suruti before beginning of the concert. I took his request upto Amma, and requested her is it possible to accomodate. She said, she had no problem, but wanted to check with Bhama krishnan, vocal support. They were discussing 'neela varna pahimam..', amma asked do you know 'jalaja bandhu..' , and Ms Bhama said yes.. That's how the song was mentioned by amma. Few songs are known more from anupallavi lines.... Like sompaina manasu... (pallavi line is challare ramA.. in ahiri of thyagaraja)
who's composition is jagadIsha?? I have heard it many times sung by MS Amma & SSI

If I am right, the varnam is a composition of Palghat Parameshwara Bhagavathar, a mahavidwan who adorned the court of Swathi thirunal. Jagadisha is a composition of Swathi Thirunal Maharaja. The Thillana I think is a composition of Ramnad Srinivasa Iyengar.
Awesome concert by Smt Ponnammal. The varnam was sung very briskly with some nice swarams for Madyamam. Meru Samana was grand with excellent sarvalaghu swarams (reminiscent of Shri SSI) at galamuna sobillu. Yadukulakamboji was sung with all grandeur that the song demands and her disciple supported her really well. The pick of the concert was however the nattaikurinji kriti. It was a real treat. Sudha mayi (and it really rained!!) was a good filler to the main shankarabaranam. (I was expecting Thodi or Bhairavi since she had already sung yadukulakamboji and nattaikurinji before) Nevertheless Shankarabaranam was again extraordinary. Neraval and swarams at caranam were sung with so much control and gusto that one wondered if she was really 80+. Shri RKSK was very supportive throughout and his shnakarabaranam alapanai was really amazing. Thani by Shri Arun had some nice patterns and the transition from catusram to kandam was smooth. Post thani items included swathi hits. Hamir's dwi madyamams were sung very aesthetically.
Overall a grand concert from start till the end.

The concert reminded one of yesteryears and notable for the perfect sruthi alignment - Natakurinji krithi of Swathi Thirunal - jagadeesa was outstanding as was the YK Kambhoji Swarajathi of Shyama Sastri.
RK SRK was very supportive from beginning to end - Arun Prakash played a subdued Mrudangam, though his nadai was good.

Here are my brief comments.. The song list was quite cool - look at the range of composers for first 6, 7 pieces!! To me, pick of the concert was swara jathi and shankaracharyam.. Shankarabharanam alapana was very good. She sang amrutavarshini again (she sang on friday too!!), and it rained very heavily during and after concert!!
To keep laya experts busy, here is the korvai she sang for sankaracharyam before tani.. Corrections welcome..I would like to learn more about this! The kuraippu was also good. She did 1 avarthanam, 1/2 avarthanam, 1/4 avarthanam etc - each of time ending at panchamam.
(Notation - captial letter is tara sthayi, '-' means elongated note for 1 aksharam). Structure is like 3*(6+6+8 + 5 + 5 +5)

Oh how I complain about audience behaviour, and yet how often do I arrive late.
Still I had determined not to miss this concert, a performer who's name I have been hearing so often, so however late, I did not give up.
It was a lovely program. She is not the sort of performer a novice like me (yes, there is no time limit for being a novice) can really appreciate at first sight. As Hari remarked (good to meet you) it was pure, classical music.

A small correction in your kOrvai structure. It is (3 x6) + 3 + (3 x5).
This gives 36 aksharams or 36/4 = 9 beats when played/sung once. When played/sung 3 times, it gives 9 x 3 = 27 beats. One avartanam of Adi tALam 2 kaLai has 16 beats. The place where she sang kalpanA swaram was 1 beat after the start of the tALam (i.e, eDuppu = 1 beat or 4 aksharams after samam). So 27 - (16+1) = 10 beats. So the kOrvai has to be start ed 10 beats before samam (of the next Avartanam) or in other words 6 beats after samam (of the present Avartanam).

Nick - that's pure music - we don't get hear much these days - except from senior vidwans like Nedunuri garu, Srikantan, Vedavalli etc..
It was a no frills concert - sorry to hijack no-frills captain Gopinath (he is cheif of no-frills airlines - air deccan in india!
ram - thanks for your correction and help on korvai. In ponnamaal amma's concerts i attended so far (i think, this is 4th one - since May'08 - not a bad rate, in 3+ months, 4 concerts!!!!) she didn't sing any korvai or kannakku, so i thought i should mention that in this thread! My thinking was based on splitting of swaras, thanks again for your clarification. It helps to increase awareness, and also on what to look out for next time i attend a concert..

Hari,
You did a great job with the kOrvai. There was just a "one aksharam" pause missing. Thats all.
Here is the 'swaram' version in your notation with the extra pause added in the third line (you had written p - while it was p - - )
G R - S n d
R S - n d p
S n - d p m p - -
G R S n d
R S n d p
S n d p m
