I attended the programme on 15th. The quiz started at 3.30 pm.It was conducted by Sowmya and Shashikiran. The quiz was on Syama Sastri and there were 5 teams with 2 persons in each team. It was a very educative quiz..we got to know a lot of details about Syama Sastri which we were not aware of. Vidwan TRS was present and was very appreciative about the way in which the quiz was conducted. The audience participation was also very good.

This was followed by 4 mini concerts of Syama Sastri kritis.

The first one was Vijay Siva. Violin - Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi. Mridangam - Manoj Siva.

1. Neelayadakshi - Paras
2. Pahi Sri - Ananda bhairavi
3. Tallininnu - Kalyani
4. Palinsu Kamakshi - Madhyamavati

He sang all the 3 charanams in this kriti.
5. Brovavamma - Neelambari

This was followed by Smt Vedavalli, supported by Sumitra Vasudev.

1. Marivere Gati - A.bhairavi
2. Himadrisute - Kalyani
3. Ninnuvina - Abheri
4. Brovavamma - Manji
5. Karunajooda 0 Sri

Both the concerts were very enjoyable. I had to leave after this.

i went on Day 1, that is 14th of August.

i reached late and could make it only when Sri Natarajan, formerly DD director was talking. Earlier Sri VV Sundaram spoke as well.

After the speeches, the group singing of the three svarajathi was presented. the participants where:

Palai Sri Ramachandran, Smt Prema Rangarajan, Smt Sowmya, Sri Shashikiran, Sri Ganesh, Sri Aditya Prakash, Kum Nisha Rajagopal on vocal. Nagai Sri R Sriram, Sri B Ananthakrishnan on the fiddle, Neyveli Sri Narayanan on the mrudangam and Nerkunam Sri Sankar on the Kanjira.

Wherever existed, the different versions that are in vogue were presented as well. There were different versions for a few caraNams in the yadukula kAmbhOji svarajati and for many caraNams in the tODi piece.

All those who participated gave some of their personal insights into the svarajati and also put forth some of the special phrases that portray the rAga bhAvam.

Ravi,
dEvi, brOva samayamidE--this is the hour! 'rEpu mApu' (nALaikku gILaikku--the typical mazhai gizhai, kind of nonsensical addition, I think).
rEpu mApu wouldn't do. brOva samayamidE.
mApu is also corrupt form of mAf. Just wondering...

In this rarely sung charanam, Shyama Sastri is said to allude to the contest with Bobbili Kesavayya that was scheduled for the next day... "Please bestow me with your grace, tomorrow, O devi..." (rEpu means tomorrow in Telugu)

If you say rEpu, I won't hear of it--is how I understand it...

Thanks Arun! But what do YOU make out of it? I mean, the line in the song.

Trust the good citizens of this forum to complicate an essentially simple sentence. It's not 'repu mapu...'. The Hindu columnist is right: "rEpu mApani ceppitE nE vinanu dEvi" and 'gundakriya' has succinctly captured the meaning.

Without wanting to complicate it further (believe me on this!),
samayamidE, ati vEgamE vucci--tomorrow? My 'simple' understanding is: at this hour and pronto, please! Not later, the next day .
