Shri Madurai TN Seshagopalan - Vocal
Shri TNS Krishna - Vocal Support
Shri VV Ravi - Violin
Shri KV Prasad - Mrudangam
Shri TV Vasan - Ghatam

Date : 15th August 2008
Venue : Asthika Samajam, Alwarpet

1) Ganapathi Thalai - Nattai - S (the song was preceded by a Shlokam)
2) Tharunam Idamma - Gaulipanthu-AS
3) Shri Varalakshmi - Shri - A (he announced that he is singing it on the occasion of Varalkshmi Puja on that day even though it is not a Tamil Krithi as such)
4) Ekkalathilum - Purvikalyani - A
5) Thaaye Thanayan - Sama - A (own composition?)
6) Azhaga Azhaga - Shudha Dhanyasi - A
7) Murugunakku Oru Sheedan - Kalyani
8) Paradesi Petra Pillai - Bilahari
9) RTP - Madhyamavathi - Adi - Paarukkulle Nalla Naadu Engal Bhaaratha Naadu - rendered later in suitably translated forms in different languages - Hindi (as Sare Jahan Se Acha Hindusthan Hamara!), Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam! - followed by Ragamalika Swarams in Behag, Valaji, Hamsanandi and Kapi (may have missed one) - Thani Avarthanam
10) Sundari En Svapanathil - Khamas
11) Thiruppugazh
12) Thillana - Niroshta (own composition)

The concert was a fine one. Quite elaborate Ragam expansions were done for Gaulipanthu, Shri, Purvikalyani and Sama. The Sama Ragam and the rendition of the Shri Varalakshmi Krithi were the picks of the concert to me. Shudha Dhanyasi was rendered well as well. The RTP was an elaborate affair lasting for close to 1 hour 15 min, including the Thani. The multi-language innovation was a surprise. But one expects something novel from TNS anyway! The Ragamalika Swarams were well rendered with usual flavour. The Thani was brief and good. The Thiruppugazh and Thillana rounded off a nice concert. The accompanists gave able support.

Thank you, Sathej.
The bhAsha-mAlikA RTP was a surprise, indeed! TNS's imagination knows no bounds!

Haven't heard 'ekkAlaththilum' in a while.
Several new songs there.

Wasn't it 'azhaga azhagA' in suddha dhanyAsi by Ambujam Krishna?

Oops, sorry for the error. Yes, it was indeed the famous Ambujam Krishna Krithi in Shudha Dhanyasi. Edited.

Concert must have been a real treat!

He had skipped last week's Bangalore concert owing to health problems.
How is he doing now?

TNS gave a fine concert as part of Svanubhava as well sometime back. He said he really had a bad attack of viral fever and thought of cancelling the concert but as it was meant primarily for students, he decided to sing. He looked rather weak then. At this concert, yes, he had occasional problems with his voice but otherwise looked quite ok. Shall try to write a small post on that as well.

This could be tAyE tandai enRu - a pAsuram by tirumangaiyAzhvAr on tiruvEnkaTmuDaiyan. azhvAr performs SaraNAgathi to tiruvEnkaTamuDaiyAn here.

On a side note, if anyone remembers the pAsuram recited by SivAji gaNESan in the movie tirumAl perumai (episode of kaliyan), konREn palluyirai oru kuRikkOL onRu ilA mayinAl. That pAsuram is from the padigam in which tAyE tandai enRu (probably sung by TNS in the concert) is the first pAsuram.

No, it wasn't the Pasuram. This is one of his own compositions.

Muruganukku Oru Sheedan is a compositon of Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar.
