10. vAzhiya senthamizh + brief slOkham - madhyamAvati + shuruTTi

shri NSG is at times turning out to be a difficult musician for me to continously appreciate . There were moments of sheer brilliance , at times the feeling is simply not there. His start of hamsadhwani with swaras were very good. The concert was at its best when he sang beautifully tatvamariya tharamA , his diction was brilliant and he made me feel every bit of lyrics in the nectar of reetigowlai.

thiruvalamchuzhi is famous for a pullaiyAr temple near kumbakOnam, where river cauvery swirls right (hence the thamizh name thiruvalamchuzhi). My head always swirls when there is kalyAni,shri NSG sang a beautiful neraval in the lines "maNN kAveri soozh thiruvalanjuzhi vAnanai vAzhAlE" almost singing like a pallavi line and setting right few suzhi's in my head .His second half of swaras were very good.

Gowlipantu lacked the punch , perhaps shri NSG could have sang more bringing gowlipantu rAgabhavam . The main in thirruppugazh was just good ,as I am too used to hear a very very expansive melakartha 22. Out of the tukkadas kApi stood out , his viruththam despite in three rAgas was just too short . The concert was all thamizh affair aptly titled isai thamizh.

Few minuses in Shri NSG's delivery
Despite having one of the best male voices and rich manOdharmam , at times atleast 3 minuses are bothering me .

1. NSG takes almost every oppurtunity to present swaras , at times the swaras dont last too long to give a wholesome feeling .

2. Too much of appreciation of fellow artists especially the violinist (today with Shri MAS) almost for every move robs intrinsically of what each of them could have delivered more. Afterall CM is best when there is total silence , with possibly little praises.

3. At times staying little too long in sowkhyam just leaves a critical presentation of mel sthayi prayogas getting excluded .Especially when rAgas like kharaharapriya are presented, felt the most.

shri MAS gave a very good support , just felt his kalyAni was little too long in melancholy mode . Excellence was at its best when pathri satish played , he just reminds me of this effortless jamaican sensation usain :) bolt.More than tani I liked the way he played for every song with bountiful fast strokes , purushOtam was just good .

Rajesh,
Nice to get a review from you at last! Too much work, I guess--which keeps you away from concerts. To manOdharmam, in NSG's case, I would add dhyAnam too!
An all tamizh concert by vidyaarthi, and I missed it. MAS on the violin too!
Haven't heard Patri Satish play, though I come across his name nowadays. Who is his guru?

When you do, arasi, I can pretty much guarantee you will be in for a treat. Great nAdam, solid knowledge of songs and an aesthetic presentation of some incredible calculations. An outstanding mridanga vidvAn.

shivanAr manam kuLira is an awesome piece. The line for neraval would be 'navanItamum tiruDi uralODE onrum ari raghurAmar sindai magizh marugOnE' - a piece on Muruga where a cross reference to an episode in Krishna's life is made. Heights of imagination. Nice choice for a main piece.

"Usain" Patri is one of my favourite mridangam aristes as well. I just love his naadam and anticipation and seemingly effortless play.

Some info on Patri Satish Kumar at
http://www.itcsra.org/sra_sammelan/artist_del06.html

"Satish Kumar is one of the most sought after Mridangam artist. His gurus are some of the great Mridangam players from Andhra, Sri Ramachandramurthy, V.A.Swami and V.Narasimhan. Satish was inspired into the world of Percussion right from childhood by his mother Padmavathy, a renowned violinist. He played his first concert at the young age of 7. He plays Classical, Fusion and Jazz. A very innovative artiste, he has played with leading bands such as Flute Shashank and Violin Ganesh Kumaresh. He has played in many international festivals such as the Festival of France, Miami Beachfront Festival and the India Gate Festival. Apart from having played many recordings with different melodic instruments from India and the West, Satish has also conceived a special Laya Vinyasam (a cascade of rhythms) titled ‘Dancing Drums’. An integral part of the Percussion department of A.I.R, Satish Kumar has regaled audiences in USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Emirates, Italy, Japan and Mauritius".

arunsri,
Here are a couple more examples of how Arunagririnathar's imagination and deployment of words runs riot. It is interesting to see how beautifully he relates Muruga to Shiva and Vishnu:

endhai varuga raghunAyaka varuga maindha varuga maganE ini varuga enkaN varuga enadhAruyir varuga abhirAma ingu varuga arasE varuga mulai uNga varuga malarsUdida varuga endru parivinodu kOsalai pugala varumAyan chindhai magizhu marugA

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This one is my most favorite Thiruppugazh piece. What a fantastic composition !!! This is a unique feature of Arunagiri's compositions - addressing Muruga as Lord Shiva himself !!.

jaya jaya aruNaadhdhiri sivayanama
jaya jaya aruNaadhdhiri masivayana
jaya jaya aruNaadhdhiri namasivaya ...... thirumoolaa

jaya jaya aruNaadhdhiri yanamasiva
jaya jaya aruNaadhdhiri vayanamasi
jaya jaya aruNaadhdhiri sivaya namasthu ...... enamaaRi

jaya jaya aruNaadhdhiri thanin vizhi vaiththu

He is a disciple of Vankyala Narasimham (not sure of the spelling) of Vizag. This gentleman's son V V Ramanamurthy is also an excellent mradanga vidwan.

Had the fortune of listening to and speaking with Sri Patri in 1990/91. At that point he was already knew he would commit his life to music.
