maNirangu short sketch

The concert started with a nice rendition of the tEvAram and the varALi short sketch which followed was real good. The kriti was rendered with good bhavam and with neraval and svarams at 'shyAmE sankarI digvijaya pradAbini' were rendered with his usual vigour.

The aTANA AlApanai was done very beautifully showing all the aesthetic beauty of the ragam. The kriti was rendered with svarams in viLamba kAlam. The flavour of aTANA in slow tempo was very good and enjoyable. The sALagabhairavi svarams in high speed were good also.

The main tODi AlApanai was pretty elaborate and the kriti was followed with beautiful neraval in three kAlams and svarams. The jAvaLi which followed was nice. The mukhAri padam was just brilliant and so was the rAga mAlikA viruttam. The tiruppugazh was good also.

Sri Krishna gave a good concert with his usual vigour and it was enjoyable over all from the tEvaram to the maNirangu. Sri Ravi on the violin was overall good in lending support, though at parts there were some lapses. Sri Manoj Siva did a good job both in accompanying the artists and during the tani. He was well assisted by Sri Amrit.

The padam is not by Kshetragna... it is a composition of Muddu Natesa and the pallavi line is "kAshikki pOyyene...". "OsOsi..." is the anupllavi.

Couple of other small corrections: 1) "tani Avarttanam" 2) "digvijaya pratApini..." (in mAmava mInAkSi)! :)

I was also there for the concert. I really enjoyed his AtANA alApana the most.Todi Neraval and swaram was excellent. On the flip side , I found the tillAna and JayantesAna little excessively loud.???Shri VV Ravi's lapses was most noticable in Todi.

maulau ganga shashAnkau is an appaya Dikshitar composition , popularized by SSI.A very good concert by TMK.

thanks for that meena. I knew it, should have put it.

ramanathan, dont many padams have a different repeating line apart from where it starts. i have observed in some kshEtragna padams also the first line with which one starts the padam is not the repeating line. and thanks for the corrections.

rajeshnat, i would agree on ur comments about Sri Ravi. Infact i found his playing a bit off sruthi and also his bowing was a bit shrieky at many places all thro' the concert.

Strangely intriguing opening! Other than that, only other Tamil piece being the Thiruppugazh. Was hoping for one other longer piece in the language....oh well.

Thanks for the review + songlist rbharath!! It's worth adding to my list of lists LOL

I do appreciate the review, but what a shame that the part of the mridangam player, particularly at this particular function, should only receive one sentence recognition.
