Excellent concert, masterly R, N, S in varaLi, extensive and carefully chiselled alapana of shrIranjani, most rivetting of all was the grand hamsadhwani alapana, it was a lesson in how to build a raga with 'so called limited scope'. Classy accompanists lifted the concert to greater heights. Narendran's thani was complex and must have been a lesson for laya buffs. His sensitive accompaniment for kritis (mAthurbhUtam, maragatahmaNivarnA, shrI dum durgE) heightened the effect. MAK's responses were measured yet scholarly.

The brother's repertoire is amazing, so is the well coordinated delivery (they stay in Bangalore and Mysore). Their concert planning, excecution, stage presence and mannerisms are a lesson worthy of emulation.

Choice of composers, tAla etc was very nice. Not a dull moment in the 3 hr 15 min recital

My only problem with this songlist is that there were no Tamil items.

Otherwise, the songlist is outstanding. Manodharma elements have been divided across the first half well. And as pointed out by arunsri, tAlA, composers and rAgA choices are terrific. To top it off, MAK & Narendran would have been awesome, as always. A good package :)

I don't think I've heard the Sriranjani piece. Any good audio available?

mahesh3,

It is in kAmbhOji, though the start seems to be yadukula kAmbhOji with characteristic phrases of p d s p and s r m.

As Smt. Vedavalli had pointed in a lec-dem, the mUrchana - p d s p, and a few others are exclusive yadukula kAmbhOji prayogas. Over time, then have come into kAmbhOji and have now become synonymous with kAmbhOji, as a result, yadukula kAmbhOji is losing it mUrchana slowly.

vocalist: shrI dum durgE has been sung by DKJ, I am sure vijay siva sings it too. Nevr once during the concert, did one feel the lack of a tamil piece. BTW, the thillana is a tamil composition. Rpatnam Bros, have a large repertoire of Oothukkadu, kOTishwara ayyar kritis etc.

arunsri, thanks for your detailed review

In spite of this, we can still tell if yadukula kAmbhOji is sung, right? ( say in a relatively short alapana ).

Thanks arunsri for the clarification abt Khamboji/Yadukula Khamboji. The eastcoast misses your detailed reviews of concerts in the review, now that u r back in Mumbai :)

I have seen their sister RN Srilatha sing also in concert, and boy, she is something. Next time I head back to Bangalore, I plan to look up some of her concerts.

Likewise, Papanasam Ashok Ramani knows Papanasam Sivan krithis and Rajkumar Bharathy knows Subramania Bharathiyar items...yet they hardly sing the rare-unheard stuff. That's what's the irritating part. Had no idea the tillAnA was Tamil. Thanks for clarifying.
