There is one more rarely heard keertanam that I learnt from Embar Sri Raghavasimhan. It is a composition of Sri Achuta Dasar, and the pallavi goes like "Paramathma jothiye parithi mati aadhiye"

Any reason why there are so many 'commonly in vogue' Bilahari compositions in Chapu thalams? Possibly disproportionately compared to other ragams? Or this is just a case of my perception biassed due to the sampling error? At an artisitic level, the chapu seems to fit Bilahari well...

My earliesr recollection of a lovely bilahari was a track relaesed commercially by Sankaran Namboodri. He must have been a kid himself then but that track on the Radio used to be wonderful.Never heard it afterwards though.

Lalgudi Jayaraman next visited Davangere (a place near my hometown in Karnataka). It was an evening concert and he was upset by the fact that the concert was arranged in a Drama theatre(the thatched roof kind of structure)
after some persuasion he went on to perform .And his Naa Jeevadhara is etched in my memory.
Looks like this raga is a favourite of violinists though.

Here are a few of my all time favourites..all short tracks

http://rapidshare.de/files/23661261/cha ... lahari.mp3
http://rapidshare.de/files/23661769/cho ... aharii.mp3

and a nice vocal track by TVS--paridana

intakannAnandamEmi - by MMI made me see the beauty of this raga and only after listening to MMI that all other songs that I had listened before came to life at that instance ... Toli Janma by Alathur Bros is the next in my list.
Anyway, coming to MMIs rendition, the aalapana both by MMI and TNK ( I think) is amazing with the violinist grabbing applause for the aalapana.

Regards,
SR
PS: not to confuse with Attana SR, (Apologies to prefix with Attana)

I heard a song from MLV in Bilahari (am sure it is bilahari) .... It starts off something like Kshetra palaka or something which I could never decipher the entire song !! Can anyone please tell me is there any song like this ? It is a Tyagaraja piece ..

I will upload it shortly if no one has it (i am sure this is not the case) ! The concert just says MLV 111, I am sure many of you will have the same copy circulating and it starts of around 38th min into the concert

You guys have to tell me whether it is a commercial recording ? If not, will upload ...
This concert also has Kalyani as the main piece (Nijadasa - Patnam Subm. Iyer ), Bhairavi RTP. Starts off with Vatapi and Sadinchane follows !

Also, does any have the lyrics for this song ? I didnt find this in the list of Bilahari songs in the thread above .

I thought this kriti was originally composed in misra jhampai and later speeded up to kaNDa cApu. It give a blissfully different feeling, when you sing it slowing with misra jhampai.

i hope the adi mentioned by somchai is only a typo...

Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar composed the song Anna Vahana Devi..
Bilahari is one of my favourite ragas..Its awesome, especially in Instrumental music. The phrases GPDRS, NDDPMGR, and GPDM...GR sung/played with its feel can bring you a total blissful experience.

Do you have any reference that it is by Mutiah Bhagavatar? The song is not in any of his published books.

And another one comes to life.

The most exhilarating roller coaster of a composition in bilahari - nA jeevadhara : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pzby7z0ZfN8#t=27m42s - how many sangatis do you count in the pallavi?!!

The vocal version with an AlApanA by SSI : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GasV0PsUlMw
And Maharajapuram Santhanam : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wnB--vNwOM

Other than dariNi or some compositions of OVK, big "race pace" kritis are quite rare, and spectacular when they're pulled of.

The joke by Semmangudi Mama was that Thyagarja meant to ask the Lord not to take away YOUR life by the time you finish singing this song!

And then bilahari's discussion wouldn't be complete without Ekadantam bhajEham (Dikshitar) or GNB : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtfyWiRhk-g

There are many more Dikshitar kritis in this raga.

Do excuse me for the memory lapse!!

The idea for the varnam thread isn't forgotten, but in the light of so many things needing my attention from pre dawn to late night, I had to choose between that or the ragas for now.
