It gives me great pleasure to write about the gifted young chitravina player Vishal, a disciple maestro Ravikiran.

Vishal plays with a maturity and gnyanam beyond his years and one might say he is a truly authentic representative of the Ravikiran bAni of chitravina playing. This bAni is characterized by, among innumerable other things, technical perfection combined with exquisite ornamentation, modulation, glide optimization (very important for a sliding instrument), pluck optimization (very important for a string instrument...must mention the unique technique of potthal i.e., stopping the vibration with the ring finger), kaarvai optimization, etc... all made to appear so easy. Vishal has an excellent posture and a breathtaking economy of movement rarely seen in any chitravina/gotuvadyam player - all you can see is the rapid movement of the left arm from elbow downwards and the miniscule movement of the fingers of his right hand. And he is already imparting his own personal embellishments to his guru's style...!

In music too, one might say Vishal is an authentic representative of the bAni. The pUrvikalyani as well as the shankarabharanam alapanas were really good and reminiscent of his guru, as were all the kritis. Special mention must be made of the tillana...it is full of delightful rhythmic twists and surprises that keeps you very alert. Vishal played the challenging piece very well.

Violinist krishnasubramaniam played competently.

The young mridangist hemant did his job very well, given the challenge of accompanying an instrument like the chitravina. The tani was short and sweet.

Judging by the standard of the dhanyAsi tillAnA composed by Sri Ravikiran, I am sure the bEhAg tillAnA must be incredible...

Sounds like a young artiste to watch!
