Kamaraj Arrnagam 24th Dec 2008

Aruna Sairam
Raghavendra Rao
Tiruvarur Vaidyanathan
Ramani Ghatam

Song List

1. Jagadha Nandhakaraka T Natai
2. Panthuvarali Yanaganu Rama Bhajana (RNS)
3. Thodi Thaye Yesodha ( RST)

Followed by Abhangs and folk songs.

The kamaraj Arangam was packed to capacity with an estimated audiance of more than 2000. with two big TV screens on either side and plenty of TV cameras and light , along with the crowd clapping her frequently, I was reminded of a day-night match at Eden Gardens.

Not withstanding the above , her Thodi and Panthuvarali was very good. It was the second thodi as the main raga for the day, haveing heard Baby Sriram also sing thodi as her main in Parthasarathy Sabha.

Like yesterday in Nitya shree's concert , I was again impressed with the performance of Raghavendra Rao. The Vaidyanathan and Ramani played a good thani.

Yeah Raghavandra Rao is one of the best violinists in the circuit. Unfortunately since he doesn't accompany SAnjay TMK etc. he gets very little "visibility" on this forum ;-). BTW speaking of violinists, what happened to Nagai Sriram. A fine young violinist - he seems to have very few concerts this season except for 1 or 2 with Gurucharan

I am no one to comment ,but I felt Aruna Sairam Maami refering to her notes even for popular song "vishamakaara kannan' in jayatv along with other songs did not go well with me.Especially on the previous day Vijay Shiva sir said "Paper vechundu paada kudadu ".
I remember even Ananda Vikatan commented about Aruna Mamis singing from notebook last year.If senior artists does this then wont other young artists follow? Is it cutcheri dharmam?

Anandabhairavi,

I guess that reading from notebook is very related to evolution of an artist and the memory power of an artist. Those days, vidwans
learnt all songs when they were very young and thus they never forget the songs till 60-70 years old. The young memories last long.
And if I am correct, Aruna Sairam had a late career and hence probably she (re) learnt songs at a later age. And I can tell you, with age
nothing is guaranteed , everything is different. I guess she can improve the performance aesthetics by having a laptop. She gets the height
on text and need not tilt the face so much. Best is the electronic text board behind the audience in big letters.

Unnikrishnan in his airtel supersinger program mentioned about memorising songs but he said he himself forgot on a day and had to
manage. Invariably the audience feel that (when referring to notebook) , artist might loose focus.

And people say the solution is, to revise songs on the day of concert. But it simply doesnot work with song and dance performances
(dance step sequencing in a group dance). I guess Aruna Sairam being such a busy artist cannot even afford the time for revising etc.

But I felt this year's MMU concert of her is not as good as her concert two years back.
