I am not sure about the order in which i have put the kanjira and ghatam is right(or should ghatam come ahead of the kanjira??). anyways after a lot of desperation i finally attended ramani sir's concert this season(first of ramani sir this season for me)...The ambience is so special and it really made me feel why majority of the concerts those days were held in temples...
After a wonderful darshan of the lord, the ata thala varnam started in a very relaxed mood and was played beautifully.Till now am yet to hear a more beautiful interpretation of this majestic varnam..Then gowlai and hindolam was rendered crisply with a little AlApana in hindolam. Then came kalyani and it is here i felt that mike played traunt and in the upper octaves the flute's sounded very shrill and robbed its melody.
My opinion about nagai muralidharan(i am no one to pass comments let alone criticise)..He is an outstanding violinist no doubt and when accompanyin it is great to anticipate what the main artiste is going to play,,but to play that before the main artiste does that,,is something which didnt seem too well.Ramani mite have laughed at him but am sure he must have thought inside that "them why am i sitting in the centre??"..There were flashes of brilliance when he reversed the korvais what ramani sir played..
Then came pallavi. It is ok if the instrumentalists didnt announce the kritis but atleast they can make it a point to announce the pallavi line and even the thala for others' benefit. The first half was in chatusra nadai and the second half of the avarthanam, it was in thisram.Sankaran sir played awesomely as usual and am sure he must have a SSI nostalgia when playing for pankaja lOchana and nEnaruchinAnu.. An outstanding thani followed witj mayavaram somu and vasan..
It is indeed heartening to see sankaran sir play in such a way that both the upa pakkavAdhya artistes got their due and made their presence felt even as he dominated the proceedings. He showed remarkable spontaenity when the mOhrA and kOrvai he played was half chatusram and half tisram just lik the pallavi.
I waited for him to play my eternal ramani sir favourite "chinnan chiru kiliye" but left after jagadhOdhArana as i wa too hungry and thirsty to get back home after a tough day's work..Any one who was present fully, please add on..
Arvind..
