Despite his uncooperative voice, TNS was at his best. Especially Shankarabaranan and Hamir Kalyani. The accompanists merged with his music and it was one wholesome concert to attend to.

This concert of TNS was the pick of the season for me. Right from the varnam the concert took off like a supersonic jet. This concert took me to olden days and reminded me of the legendary Ariyakudi. Especially the way Akshaya linga vibho was sung. Then came the breathtaking Hamirkalyani with a madhayama kala pallavi.Hamirkalyani with all its hues painted in a grand manner followed with a mind blowing thanam and the usual TNS special pallavi with the raga mudhra intelligently crafted into it. His voice was in fine fettle.Throughout, the voice was in good form. An interesting feature I noticed was that he never sang kanakkus at all! Shows that he can give a good concert with or without it. I personaly felt happy because I feel down when I do not get to understand kanakkus :) The thiruppavai on that day was "Thoomani maadathu". TNS did not sing the thiruppavi as he does every day. I was slightly disappointed because I am a great fan of his Tiruppavais. He renders them in an impeccable manner with all the "thanians" according to the Vaishnava Bhadhathi, which is so moving and soaked with Bhakthi. The thiruppavai verse in the pallavi left me spellbound. What an intelligence! To sum up my feeling I heard the accompanists also voicing the opinion that they felt like they heard an Ariyakudi kutcheri.

Enchanting raga alapna of Poorvikalyani and the Krthi was ‘janamosakaraadhaa,’ of Thyagaraja. The neraval-svaram was sung at ‘paripoornanishkalanka niravaDhisukha dhaayakaa,’ .which aptly describes today’s concert. The rendering of raga and svara was paripoornam.

The natakurinji raga that followed, though it was the navagraha krthi ‘budhamasryami which was expected, the day being Wednesday, was evoking memories of the song ‘paalvaditum mugam ,’ of Oothukkadu because of the soundharya it depicted which was ‘paravasam migavaagum azagu..’ as described by Oothukkadu kavi.

The sankarabharanam that followed was majestic and a real Dheera snkarabharanam. The word dheera denotes majesty , durable and composed according to the derivation of the word dheera meaning dheeH raathi ithi, TNS dished out his brilliance through it.

A scintillating hameerkalyani. The elaborate raga which was sung by TNS and TNSKrishna alternatively, created a doubt whether it was going to be the thiruppavai of the day ‘thoomani maadatthu,’ and it was justified because what followed was a RTP with the words ‘maamaayan maadhabvan vaikundhan Srimannaaraayanan.’ And the thanam was wonderful. The svara was a ragamalika with the ragas bagesri, reethigoulsa, hindolam behag and suruti. The Hameer kalyani with TNS is always a ameer (rich ) and this is no exception. The exhilarating RTP can only be described by the words of the pallavi itself ‘,maamaayam

The whole concert was paripoornanishkalanka niravaDhi sukha dhaayalkam.
