Usually you just set it up for tisra jathi triputa and mute all beats except 1, 4, and 6. Doubling or otherwise increasing the speed should then give a healthy misra chapu tempo.

I thought there was a way to choose chapu thalam and then jathi-mishra.. it has 4 variations with 3 speeds each. or viceversa.

Why would anyone even want to use an electronic mridangam? It is not the way Carnatic musicians refer to their talam. The mridangam is a creatively played instrument. It is not played with thekas like a tabla. No one refers to the talam by listening to a mridangam! A talometer in my opinion is the right instrument to use as an aid for talam reference. You can mute the intermediate beats and get a very fine indication of chaapu talam.
