My pranams and heartiest congratulations to all the awardees of 2008 http://www.sangeetnatak.org/release.html
However, I felt a tad disappointed that the SNA site did not have photographs of the awardees for Carnatic music - anyway, these links have pictures http://www.mannargudiaeaswaran.com/

Born in August 1925, Sri Puranam Purushottam Sastry hails from a family of musicians. His father, Sangeeta Vidwan, Sri Kanakaiah Sastry, was the aasthana musician for Mysore, Gadwal and Wanaparthy Samsthanams. Following initial training from his father he came under the tutelage of Musiri Subrahmanya Iyer. Puranam Purushottam Sastry gaaru was a cultural scholar of the Government of India in vocal music and has been honoured with a monthly honorarium for lifetime by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. He has served as examiner for M.A. (music) of Telugu University. Other honors bestowed on him include the Hamsa award, and Samaikya Bharat Swarna Puraskar award. If anyone would kindly post a photograph of this vidwan that would be just wonderful! Many thanks.

Ravi: I suppose the yuva puraskars for 2008 will be announced sometime soon ..... http://news.webindia123.com/news/ar_sho ... e=20070222
was under the impression that the Presidential awards (Padma) were always announced in connection with the Republic Day celebrations on Jan 26th.

[Wasn't the SNA award called the President's award earlier?]
Yes indeed, but long back. ARI (vocal) and KSI(Veena) were the first recipients. SSI (vocal), if my memory is right (ahead of his guru MVI), and Dwaram (Violin) were the next.

The Academy is a Indian Govt initiative. The various committees have representatives from all over. See http://www.sangeetnatak.org/sna/comittees.htmrajaglan wrote: Somehow the north (hindustani and etc) folks, without much mass support (compared to CM) , get to garner lots of awards. Am I correct?
