Sri. Dikshitar's school considers this raga a janya raga of the 15th Mela M.M.Goula. Otherwise, this raga is a janya of the 17th Mela Suryakantham. In the Aroh. all the seven notes come, but the Avarohanam is SNDPMGMRS. This raga evokes Bhakti rasa and popular for singing the Mangalam. Dirga Dha and Ri notes are jeeva swaras. The Jayadeva Ashtapadi No.1 and No.8 are sung in this raga during Sampradaya Padhathi Bhajans.

Sri. Thyagaraja had composed more than 15 songs in this raga. Swathi Tirunal Maharaj had also composed about 8 songs. The other composers who all had composed few songs are S/S. Muthaiyya Bhagavatar, Periaswami Thooran, Kshetrajna, Vedanayakam Pillai etc., The most popular Mangalam "ni nAma rupamulaku" of Sri. Thyagaraja is sung in this rag.
