Today is the birthday of DK Jayaraman

and here is a track in his memory

http://rapidshare.de/files/26693495/dkj ... i.mp3.html

For all my agony over not having heard the great masters in live concerts , Listening to the likes of DKJ,KVN in their prime was indeed a great consolation.

I first saw him in a Spic Macay Lecdem at WCC , within a month of moving to Chennai. The newspaper ad did not elaborate what WCC stood for and I went to the hall to discover -to my horror - that it was a Womens College only after entering the small auditorium. ;)

There were quite a few giggles flashing back and forth , But DKJ's eyes welcomed me and that made me quite comfortable..

A frequent performer at Ayodhya Mantapam , DKJ was my first experience of the majesty of a carnatic concert .
Always singing in the company of high class accompanists , his concerts never failed to move me.Since i lived close to West Mambalam then , I enjoyed so many concerts of his in that vicinity.

Though ,I always felt he was singing to please himself first.

You wanted something special - so here is a track of a concert that was sung in year when a very special person known to me was born -1958.

http://rapidshare.de/files/26929821/Sem ... 8.mp3.html

There is a sweet manava Janma Doddadu to pamper to the Mysorean in you
and he is accompanied by a Bharata Ratna too here.

Hope that was special enough.

And BTW dont classify this track as Vintage.
You may be upsetting a good friend by calling him OLD !! 8) ;)

thankyou very much for the link. very glad.

coolkarNi sir, once again thanks for the anecdotes/recollections :-)
we feel just the same way about senior rasikas who have heard the likes of DKJ/KVN et al, in their prime.... and to hear about them is a pleasure..

reportedly, srI DKJ had a great sense of concert planning, and was an expert in keeping the audience attentive. our teacher used to mention that he always repeated the sangatis twice in songs, but he would sing the best or most beautiful sangati only once - so that the rasika will wait eagerly to hear it again :)

Coolji,
Thank you!
Didn't Suraiya sing Ghalib's 'nukta chin' in the film Mirza Ghalib? She was equal to him in her rendering. Is there an expert here who can unveil the layer upon layer meaning of the song (which Ghalib's poetry is known for?)...

To commemorate the incomparable Rafi sa'ab's genius, here is one of my all-time favorite tracks of his:
http://rapidshare.de/files/27729940/01_ ... r.mp3.html

This track has another significant meaning for me: a couple of years ago, I had posted a question on the 'forumhub' page asking for the rAg this song was set to - that was my introduction to Kulkarni sa'ab, who promptly emailed me an excel spreadsheet with so many songs and the rAgs they were composed in! SO, it is double thanks! Now, I hope I got the rAg right...

Ravi-

Madhuban Mein Radhika is indeed in Raga Hameer! One of my favourite Rafi songs is "O Duniya Ke Rakhwale" in Raga Darbari Kanada. There are a couple of live concert renditions of this song that are simply outstanding. Another classic is "Dekhi Zamaane Ki Yaari" - the title song from Guru Dutt's 'Kaagaz ke Phool'. For those who have not seen this movie, it is, in my opinion, a must-watch! Dutt sahab and Waheeda in possibly the best roles of their careers!

I once had Rafi's Live in Dubai cassette with these songs. Any idea where we can get one now. Listening to a live performance was indeed great! Someone screams tumhsa nahi dEkha...

Should we not let the film singers be and stick to classical music in this thread.
