Hi ,

I missed the RTP. I left the hall after the main song assuming that there is no time for RTP.

The highlight is Begada. The neraval and the swarams were spellbinding and his usual trademark.
There was a lonnnng clap for the neraval, I have never heard such a breadth challenged performance.
After the swarams, TBV took some water before starting thani , smiling and praising to TMK.
Great treat for begada fans, Sanjay gave a Begada main (anudinamu) in venugopala swamy
temple, not so long back.

The next highlight is the meenalochana brohva, My impression was that this song is usually handled in a
textbook standard approach, but TMK gave it added detailed alapana and neraval. My current fav
songs are anything in begada and Meenalochana, so what else can I ask for.

I was very happy when leaving the auditorium. Thanks to TMK. The crowd was overflowing the
hall and outside the hall in projected screen. Accompanists gave great support, especially
sriram parasuram's begada alapana was very good. the AB song and swarams for the first two songs
were good too. TMK announced the raga of the first song, otherwise I was guessing of vegavahini.

This was my second concert in Bangalore (after a brief sojourn with Kanyakumari at Ananya last week) and it was a very nice experience. The Dhanyasi, Begada, and Devamanohari alapana elaborations were excellent. TMK's stage presence, his involvement with his music, his creativity, and some of the low octave phrases in Dhanyasi and Begada were the highlights. Sriram Parasuram was simply fantastic on the violin; the sensitivity of his accompaniment, the measured responses and the sowkhyam in his music made it a great concert. His response during the ragamalika section in the pallavi (kApi) was the unforgettable moment for me in the concert. Of course TMK's neraval in Begada was a tremendous intellectual exercise with great breath control. I felt that at some places the sound was very loud and the hall's acoustics did not particularly help. Sri Bhaktavatsalam was remarkably sensitive at most places in the concert although certain passages were too fast and too loud for my aural comfort. The kanjira artist was an important rhythmic component to the success of the concert and I felt that the passages in which he accompanied Sriram Parasuram were particularly noteworthy.

All in all a nice concert, well worth the missed dinner and the long bus ride back. Mysore Nagaraj and Manjunath perform tomorrow accompanied by UKS.

Yes it was indeed an awesome concert ,but i have observed this is usual for his Odukkathur Mutt concert.
Highlights for me were AB kriti and its swaras,Dhanyasi Neraval,Begada main,Devagandhari Ragam/Thanam and the Kapi swaras during RTP ragamalika

#02 was indeed pAhi tArAkSupurAlayA by svAti tirunAL mahArAjA,this kriti is on Lord shiva of Vaikom Mahadeva temple kerala.
#03 is GNB's composition i suppose
#08 is a Sadashiva Brahmendra Kriti right?
Whose compostion is the Kanada thillana?

The official answer for this would be NO from everyone.
But I am sure someone will record for learning purpose.
If you are looking for listening purpose, then the quality will be very bad.

My cousin likes TMKs neraval. I was waiting for his neraval and it happened only in the main , the AB neraval was
short and at low speed. I happen to record the begada neraval " which lasted as long as 3.50min , just the high speed
last cycle (climax), not the full neraval" .

No request for recordings of contemporary artists please. Especially TMK, who has objected to such sharing previously.

Yes, It is GNB's masterpiece. One of a very few of his own compositions that GNB has rendered in his concerts. There is a beautiful exploration of parama kripa by by S. kalyanaraman at sangeethapriya.

begada main immediately followed by devagAndhAri RTP ,is it not too much overlap of rAgas (considering both are janyas of s'bharanam) to be presented in the same concert.

Rajesh: Those two are aesthetically quite different ragas, so that should not have caused any issues. Also, Begada with its special modulation of Ni in many prayogas can syntactically belong to 29 or 28.

As a laymen to the science behind CM, I find both the ragas totally different in listening pleasure.
But in a sense we are used to the gana ragas as main, Begada as a main is different.
But both Sanjay and TMK made it look grand in both their concerts by singing begada as main.

IMHO, even some of the seemingly light ragas, assume weight in the hands of great musicians when they expand them and explore them; they take us to such depth of the raga which we can never imagine. It is sheer BLISS.

Punarvasu,
Agreed. Though some weighty rAgAs suffer in the hands of lesser musicians and attain a light rAgA's stature! In general, even light rAgAs (with a good kruti, however brief) can reach the stature of a heavy rAgA in expert handling.

Very right. For instance Vagadeeswari raga reached zenith in the hands of late TKR.
So is Sunadavinodini by Balamurali. So well they have been expounded, it is very difficult
to find a close second. Perhaps we can start a separate thread of identifying such great one's.

The Kaanada Thillana is a composition of Ariyakkudi Ramanuja Iyengar ... I have heard Sri KVN render it after announcing it to be his guru's composition.

I had requested him to sing Devagandhari RTP by email, and he was kind enough to oblige! Actually, once he started Begada, I was reasonably sure he would not sing Devagandhari, but I was very pleasantly surprised.

Sad if such a grand concert is lost to posterity, much like the great Kapil Dev's landmark 175 at Tunbridge Wells in 1983!

I would like to hear thanam in madhyamakala rendered in Devagandhari; would sound so similar to arabhi ?

Oh, nice piece of info. I thought the bilahari thillana was SrI ARI's lone composition. DKP/DKJ used to sing this thillana with amazing accompaniment of PMI. PMI used to literally play the thillana on the mridangam (no I'm not exagerating!). Does this one also have the rAmadAsa mudra?

Hi guys,

Is the Kanada Thillana rendered in above concert same as http://sangeethamshare.org/manjunath/Ca ... kAnada.mp3 ?????

Pallavi: Dhim Tana nana Dhirana Dhim... Sahitya: Shreekara sugunaakara surasevitha...

(Please note other Kanada Thillana (attributed to Poochi and sometimes to TQ) has a similar sahitya. But Pallavi goes: thom tha thani thani tha dirana).

Please let me know.

Ganesh.

This is exactly the sort of inane quibbling we could do without, considering how rare it is to hear a pallavi in a rakthi ragam like Devagandhari. Besides, we're talking about the major scale here, right? It isn't like he sang two janyas of Vakulabaranam consecutively.

The concern about thanam sounding like Arabhi is completely legitimate - my guess is TMK must have been just a tad repetitive in his phrases to establish the difference.
