Sri Mharajapuram Srinivasan and Sri Vazhoovur Ravi are the other musicians apart from Sri Zakir Hussain for Bharathanatyam who are awarded Kalamamani this year.

My sincere congrats to all the vidwans for having won the Kalaimamani award this year. However i am surprised to see not many registering their views / comments in this thread inspite of the fact that the news is already there in all the media. Any strange reasons!!!

Kalaimamani is another joke. If one looks at other personalities that have got this award, it includes Aishwarya (D/O Rajni), Vyapuri,Nayantara, Asin etc. I can understand if Saroja Devi gets it.

This does not mean that embar doesn't deserve it. Embar should have got it much earlier and so do many other musicians in CM. It is definitely an insult to Embar and other CM musicians to share the stage with some of their cine counterparts. An Award gets respect only if it is bestowed on deserving artists(irrespective of the field) & not miss a well deserved artist. Carnatic musicians are very sensitive & i'm not surprised by their silence.

I don't know why everyone started worshipping/praising Embar. So many stalwarts were equally deserved but were deprived of this award. Kalaimamani is a joke, as rightly said by Kadambam. We have to feel sad that it has not been given to many senior vidwans.

The same opinion was echoed by many cine artists (in their tribute function to Nagesh), when "Padma" award was announced to Comedy actor Vivek leaving great comedy actor Nagesh. In fact it was suggested that Viviek to renounce the award back to Govt in a protest that it has not been given to yesteryear deserving artists.

Sastrigal,

If you read the posts (in this and other threads) of the individuals who've posted praising Sri Embar (who, I think is a deserving awardee, but then, like you said, there are more that are equally deserving who have been ignored) a certain story will emerge that will be illuminating...

These kalaimAmaNi awards, like the padma ones are sometimes the equivalent of a political pat on the back...

Sam: It is interesting topic. On that occasion (Nagesh's tribute) at PS High school, Gangai Amaran (brother of Ilayaraja) hammered the selection committee of "Padma". He was very angry and very very upset that the award was not given to Nagesh or living legends like M.S.Vishwanathan or Vaali but given to Vivek who has done nothing except beng a below normal comedy actor.

He also informed how Bhavadharini (the daugther of Ilayaraja) got a national award for a song which does not have any "sandham" or "melody" wherein her father Ilayaraja's few songs (He sang few songs sung by Ilayaraja) went unnoticed.

He added that was a real SIXER- "It takes 7.5 lakhs to get "padma" award. I know who should meet in Delhi, who "sHOULD BE GIVEN" and how much ?. I have the list with me. Any body wants, they can approach me"

He also added= "Nagesh does not like to be awarded like this. He is a real comedian. His timing is impeccable. Good that he does not get this "mockery" award......

THE ENTIRE CROWD WAS SITTING IN SHEER SILENCE, I TOO.

Gangai Amaran might have his justification for his outburst. But does it mean that everyone who has won it has actually not "won" it but "bought" it? And his reference to the "Mayil Pola" song is unfortunate. I think it is a very, very good composition and Ilayaraja has very aptly used Bhavadharini's (pretty rustic and untrained) voice to great effect. That is something that Ilayaraja excels at - the mood of the song fits the movie like a glove. Is Amaran's lament that this award was also "bought"?

BTW, has Ilayaraja received any Padma award at all?
