TNS is perhaps the most talked about artist for a variety of things, in this forum. However I could not resist my eagerness to share with the members a small report of the concert that I heard yesterday.
He began with a beautiful rendition of the Kamboji Ata Tala Varnam, Sarasijaaksha. It was rendered with all the grandeur and status that the raga demands.
Though he sang Ennadu Nee (Vachaspati), Thunai Purindarul, Orajoopuchu, my personal pick was the the song Sri Satyanarayanam in Subhapantuvarali, Thodi Ragam ( with an impromptu Pallavi in K.Triputa, On the Lord Padmanabha in Sesha Vahana, the Vahana for that day),the Kuntalavarali swaram in the raga malika swaras for the pallavi and Kapi ragam in the virutham Siru Viralgal Thadavi parimara.
Sri Satyanarayanam is almost a TNS number, as many rasikas must have heard him sing this umpteen number of times. But every time , it comes across as being fresh. Yesterday, the rendition was so soulful, with a divine intonation, that I am sure, many in the hall would have realised the potency of the words " Sarvam Vishnumayam Sri".
The brilliance and rapidfire shots in the raga alapana cannot be described by me fully. No swara, no octave or no combination or patterns were left untouched / unexplored.
After a point , to me, I guess, it was not what he was singing , that made a difference, because, it was pure Thodi in all its essence; as much as how he can manage so much, in such magnanimous proportions, lung power and energy unmatched. Such clarity in Gamakas and Brighas, with no loss of swaras and such precision landing of notes !!!
Kuntalavarali is a joyful raga and the 'smpnds' swaras, juggled in his music with multi combinations and cascading patterns .
I guess to artists like him music is a celebration, that it manifests itself with so much joy and verve.
V V Ravi on the violin, Trichur Narendran on the mridangam and K.Vijayaraghavan (Vocal Support) amply kept up the verve lending smooth, easy support, thus embellishing the concert.

It was an outstanding concert by the master. Srisathyanarayanam and the todi rtp were just brilliant. TNS showed why he is unmatchable in his skills with the rtp. His lung power and voice was amazing. Attending his concert is an education.

Yes, it was a profoundly introspective rendition of SrI satya nArayanam with the ShAnthAkaram slokam and a true vintage TNS thOdi like gentle breeze dwelling in the middle and upper otaves, and the way he broke into sruti bedam in thodi alapanA with gay abundance and effortless felicity"¦ Did you get the ragam when he glided from thodi in melodic agility by keeping mEl rishabam as mEl shadjamam? It had shades of amrithavarshini though"¦ still trying to figure out.. and the way he was romancing and enjoying the long gliding phrases in the swara raga malika in bahudari, ahiri, kunthalavarali and I think it is chandra kouns as much as the awestruck audience did... Well, the concert was indeed an irresistible expression of creative passion kindling a sense of soulful peace enhancing the temple ambience in the listener. Simply love his music...

Yes , i did notice the subtlety with which he did the sruti bedham,he launched into Sunadhavinodhini from Todi and went back to it.
Yes it was literally romancing , gliding and volleying with swaras . Patdeep also was an exceptional rendition. So creative in constructing patterns, that too in such ragas.
He is capable of soulful vilamba kala rendition with as much ease and bhavam, as he is of fast ones with amplified brighas. Amazing that one voice can handle a range of sounds, notes and patterns. Leaves one awestruck ! ! !

I have nothing to add over the exuberant reviews of alll the above members . Yes it was really a divine concert. The dvajarohana was the kambodhi adathala varnam. After orjupuju, the vachaspathi is something that requires a vachaspathi, master of words, to describe in full.'Enaadu nee ,' was the krthi and the svara was superb. After a short 'palayamaam,' in nayaki of swathithirunal the ending of which portrayed the full raga in a capsule form, TNS started 'ksheerasagara sayana,' in devagandhari. What occured to me on hearing the subhapanthuvarali next which started from the thara sthayi was that the ksheerasagara sayanan had listened to the plea to come down from His heavenly abode to earth, to prove that he is indeed the 'kaliyuga prasanna.'
As aptly said by nightingale the effect of sarvam vishnumayam was seen in the sloka itself when he sang 'sarvalokaaikanaaTham.'
After the krthi 'ThunaipurindharuL,' the svara for which was delightful TNS strode gracefully on thodi . The pallavi was 'seshasayanaa ezundhuvirainthodi vaa etc.'and I thought that the Lord would definitly come soon and He did, shorthly after TNS finished the thodi. Yes the Lord Anathapadhmanabha who went on His rounds before the concert returned hearing the calling of thodi. The words of pallavi reminded one of the word of Thirumazisaippiraan who said "kudandhaiyuL kidandhavaarezundhirudhupESu ." Hence the Lord got up from his seshasayana and came running, 'ezundhuvraindhu odi vaa!'
The second half of pallavi was set in svarakshara’ kaakka ,’ ga ga and ‘ neekariyena,’ as ‘ni ga ri,’ which is a superb prayoga of thodi. The meaning of the pallvai also was excellent calling the lord to protect in the manner he did the Gajendhra, ‘kari.’ Ena ninaindhu.
The thodi of TNS comes running whenever he calls 'virainthodi varum.' The day beng that of sesha vahana and the Lord being worshipped by the music of Seshagopalan made one feel that the Lord Anathapadhmanabha was not inside the sanctum sanctorum but was right in front in the hall of the concert. After the thani it was the viruttham 'siruviralagaL thadavi,' of Periazvar which is the one that never fails to attract the rasikas as TNS sings it with full bhava and wonderful delineation of ragas.TNS followed it with the krthi .jagadhoddhaarana by which time the Lord had returened and that was the end.

Endaroo must be in the panel of ENT doctors! unfortunately he is spending time here with us.
TNS does not need people like Endaroo to say that he is a genius. TNS has proved his worth beyond these sundry personalised critisicms for more than 50 years now.
Mr. Moderator,
Kindly bann these kind of posts, immediately. It is not at all relevant to the topic discussed here. Such harsh comments, personal attacks are totally uncalled for.
Many of us here may have hundred's of opinions about other artists being discussed in this forum. If each one starts giving personal opinions here, then the moderator will have more work to do!!
Comment totally false and in very bad taste

asooya , (cavil) , will raise its ugly head now and then.Since TNS has been extolled in the recent postings by one and all without a criticism as he has been acclaimed as the number one by rasikas and reviewers and general public, there will be someone who cannot tolerate it. Just because one closes his eyes with his hands and says that the sun is not there, the sun will not disappear. That the owl cannot stand sunlight is not the fault of the sun. This kind of comments should be treated with the conrtempt it deserves.Only the one who wrote this comment should have his ears tested!

It pains to see that no action has been taken till now. Where are we heading? Should we just gulp down the fact that all these are part of the price artists have to pay for being popular?
A freak comment of this nature, lying in the server for more than a day now!

All you good people!
This forum is filled with some arrogant and proud persons who just attack other people. Like a very popular and leading carnatic vocalist said in his website, some people just take advantage that their real identities are not revealed in an online forum like this! They just vent out their anger on certain good people. No action can be taken by the moderators because these people have multiple tactics to convey their bad messages!

I would personally love to see Endaroo banned. Notwithstanding the same, I think Amruthavarshini has indeed a very short memory !
How much scorn she had poured on GG a few threads back and how sarcastic she was with sureshvv.

Please see the link below. It must be crystal clear to rasikas whom I had in mind when I raised by doubts about multiple identities.

Talk of the "devil" quoting the scriptures

I have absolutely no hesitation in announcing to fellow forumites that "amrithavarshini" is a troll that should not be fed even accidentally.

Oh God !! Not again. Let us not get into odius comparisons and mindless comments.
Mr.DOYOU CARE , Pls lets us all, as forumites learn to be a little more graceful. We are all , I assume " civil" , and i presume, that we should project that aspect more.
Yes , WE DO CARE. We care about being civil, we care about respect, we care about responsibility , just as much as we care about our right to freedom and expression. (be it with the writing instrument or tongue )
Odius comparisons between artists, blasphemous remarks, all these mar the very platform of healthy disscussion and debate. Why cant we put an end to all these ?
The more we listen to this holy art called carnatic music, the more we seem to " be going back in time", instead of getting refined.
PLEASE MY HUMBLE PLEA TO ALL,
"lets us stop this WWF type, warfare and see what we can take out from this art form and from various artists, who have toiled and worked towards keeping this art from dying a painful death."

Saveri,
It was another rAgam-named forumite (Bilahari) who said that to ignore such posts is one way of dealing with them. He has a point. Yes, most of us feel the same way as you do. Hope those who post things which have neither rhyme nor reason--just get tired of it all and stop...

Arasi,
What you says makes immense sense. That is the attitude I took all this while.
Sometimes " we just cannot toletrate APASWARAMS and APACHAARAMS".
We can shut our ears to it, but when somebody blows the bugle and trumpet right down the window again and again, you have to ask to clear the field.
It was in this mood that i wielded the option of writing.
Yes " TROLLS SHOULD NOT BE FED < BUT ALSO SHOOED AWAY AT TIMES " ! ! ! !

Saveri - Just relax, chill out!!! Hum a few bars of Saveri or Malahari. It might help soothe your nerves
All I was trying to point out was that, contrary to SR's observations, a poll of the rasikas last year (?) showed that Sanjay was "ranked" # 1 (even if it is debatable). I was just stating a fact, not making any negative remarks about anyone. On the other hand, I am really amused at the "moral police" making the rounds here. Maybe y'all should start a private yahoo newsgroup so that you can write only things that you perceive to be nice.

I accept doyoucare's point of view. I don't think it was intended to start a "comparison" fight. It was a valid retort to sarojaRamanjuam who explicitly started this #1 nonsense. It would have made more sense for doyoucare to quote just this statement by sarojaRamanujam:
For fans, I personally would recommend a loving but critical approach to appreciating one's favorite artistes and respect towards those whom you're not naturally drawn to (they are musical giants compared to you). Otherwise all sense of objectivity is lost and this kind of melodramatic nonsense is where we will end up, snapping at the smallest suggestion of a contradiction.
Each artiste is unique and may all of them shine and we humbly bow to all their vidvat and gnyanam. But personally, I don't like deifying them. As a lay listener, practically every artist I've met knows much more than me so I am entirely unqualified to comment on their music. Let me also add a disclaimer that vidvan Shri TNS is indeed like the sun to us as sarojaRamanujam rightly said. No amount of praise is adequate for his colossal stature, and the "ranking" above by sarojaRamanujam, however well intentioned, is actually a disservice. So "doyoucare" is the most appropriate response ! Bravo !sarojaRamanujam wrote:as he has been acclaimed as the number one by rasikas and reviewers and general public

I think many of us have been rather touchy these last few weeks/months with all the trolling going around... And there are issues like rankings, child prodigies, music competitions that are almost guaranteed to incite riots every time they're raised! So anyone who has been reading the forum for a few years would be sure to tread very carefully on these burning coals!
I thought doyoucare's comment was made sarcastically in reference to these arbitrary rankings, so I had a good chuckle myself

Deliberately , the posts are being mis read and misinterpreted.
What I had said was not in terms of some moral policing. It was just about bringing up the issue of ranking and other debates and building up "non- tangential controversy".
Uday and Do youcare ,could do well by starting a special group, which specialises in " backslashing , rib breaking , objective whipcracking", as they seem to have a glorified opinion about themselves as the being the best "objective police " going around. U may be "very good", but then others are not fools.

While I agree with your post yesterday regarding the futile exercise of ranking artists, you post today lacks objectivity.
I fully agree with what Uday said and I can't understand what you found wrong in that , to reply as you have done

People who have been reading this forum for a while will know that sarojaramanujam is the undisputed number 1 fan in the whole world of Sri TNS. As would be expected of any such fan, her posts are always full of magnificent and glorious superlatives to describe Sri TNS. Her one mission in this forum is to preach to the world about her chosen idol. We must hence realise that her posts will (on most occasions) lack objectivity.

That is what I thought too and chuckled until we learnt later it was meant seriously. Now doyoucare's comment sounds geeky, like what Sheldon Cooper would say (of the 'Big Bang Theory' tv show. Btw, Any fans of this show here? CBS in US and Star Cafe in India ).bilahari wrote:I thought doyoucare's comment was made sarcastically in reference to these arbitrary rankings, so I had a good chuckle myself
It is like someone pointing out a big Gandhian 'You said Gandhi is number one. Who are you kidding, he was not number 1 when he came back from south africa."

At some point of time , SR's posts are going to be a liability for the artist himself.
Hope SR understands that.
CM is not just about one person.A cake is not about just the icing.Reading SR's post is just like eating the icing alone.
I sincerely hope that SR understands that her style is counterproductive and modifies her ways of describing a concert.
I myself was once guilty of writing very personal thoughts , when this group was small , but have learnt to move to my own personal blog to share thoughts with people who know me well.
If I remember right , SR had promised to do a similar thing and only provide links here.
That would make things less chaotic here.
But then , after saying "I have nothing much to add " her post still looks the way it is.
I think Mohan is speaking for many when he says we need not be carpet bombed with the superlatives.Enough should be written to help each reader make his own judgement.
Which is what matters at the end of the day.

I have to differ...Saroja mami's posts have never been offensive or malicious. She is candid about her admiration for TNS - I think most us to know better than to expect objective criticism in her posts which, nevertheless, provide fairly detailed accounts of TNS' concerts. At least she is honest about her motives and does not allow her preferences to slander other artistes - which is more than can be said about many others, including myself, who try to neutralize what is essentially an instinctive response to an artiste and his/hermusic with seemingly objective analysis....Aren't we being too harsh?

SR's is an extreme view point being a self confessed TNS devotee. Notwithstanding that , this is exactly what makes this forum a delight, because it represents various shades of opinion. While excessive praise is certainly not advisable, it cannot under any yardstick be compared on par with denigration of artists.
What the forum needs to take care are the "trolls" who post in multiple ID's from different portals, wilfully hit below the belt with unsubstantiated charges and are able to go undetected by the Mods. (& this is no doubt a tuff and thankless job, one of the "perks" of being a moderator
)
But as Arun pointed out in a different thread we also have some "celebrity trolls" who have managed to cultivate a fan base in our forum !

To add to Vijay's and Cienu's points-of-view, I would add that SR never puts down other artists - she does her 'seva to TNS' and doesn't feel the inordinate need of a few (I am sure everyone knows the ones I am referring to) to put down others to elevate her idol! So, I say, let her be, and the chips will fall where they were meant to fall when all is said and done. As long as there is no malice, I am sure we can tolerate views that span from well rendered criticisms all the way to idolatry.

Dear arasi, mohan, vasantakokilam, rshankar, vijay, bilahari, cienu - thanks. I guess you have all pieced the discussion correctly back together.
Rajumds - yes i got a little irritated later on , I sensed some strange " better than you attitude from a couple of forumites and hence the retort. !!!
Let us all ( which includes me too, if someone were to think otherwise!!!) be careful of brining oblique, non tangential references and comparisons to the main theme of the thread.
Enough and porum, we shall move onto something more interesting !!!

Dear members,
I was carried away by the change of the tune of this forum for the past few reviews of TNS and I expressed my view and I was not the only one to criticise the post referred and I donot know why I alone should be hauled over hot coals.I actually stopped sending reviews to this forum and started again and that too only when some one else gives a good review when I thought that I can also add my comments. When I mentioned that TNS is number one I was simply quoting the review in one of the leading dailies and also the comments of various speakers and others during the season. It was not my exclusive opinoin as I know that he may be number1 to me and some one else may be that for another. In future I better confine myself to my blogs unless some one sepcifically aske for my comments in this forum.I am not a teenager whose head is turned by her idol but a lady of 72years who has had enough experience listening to music for the past 60 years or so of all the stalwarts of yesterday like GNB, Ariyakudi MDR, MMI and the like. I myself do not know what made me so enamoured with the music of TNS, the standard of which is of course high to which all will agree but it gives me a experience of divinity when I listen to him and if the Lord decides to present Himself to me through the music of TNS how can I prevent Him!. I have reached a stage where nothiong else but that which elevates me to the greatest height is the only music I can hear.As some one pointed out I never cricticise others just becasue I lkie the music of TNS only. I actually do not appriove anyone commenting on any artiste in a disparaging terms.Every artiste has put in years of effort to reach where they are now and one should not pass irresponsible comments from this side of the stage without knowing the rigours the artiste has undergone to go on stage. I am really pained to read the comments of some and I have always made my intentions very clear. I only relate my experience and I know that it need not coincide with others. When I write about TNS concert I cannot water it down to please some who cannot tolerate it. Well I may desist to comment in future to this forum the atmosphere of which I wrongly thought has changed reading the recent reviews of TNS concerts.

Whenever any discussion about TNS comes up it ends in some bitterness because the fans of TNS are so passionate about his music to the extent that anybody trying to bring about an objectivity in the comments becomes very unpopular. TNS is such a charismatic singer and charisma is all pervading. This has happened in John F Kennedy's case and in MGR's case too. TNS can count on his stars and go on and on...

sureshvv, not knowing where you are going with that quiz, do not drag specific members unnecessarily, especially if it means making fun of them or demeaning them in anyway or they can take offense. We do not want something that is intended to lighten up the mood at the expense of other members. Again, I do not know the answer to your puzzle, so consider it as a preemptive comment.
Chalanata: That is true. Just want to restate what others have stated earlier that sarojaRamanujam's point of view is well known. And she has described all that herself very well in the last post of hers. We will leave it at that.
