Shri Chengalpet Ranganathan sang this evening at Ragasudha Hall with Shri Varadarajan on the violin, Shri Trichy Sankaran on Mrudangam and Shri Purushothaman on Kanjira. It was an all Thiruppugazh concert. Held in memory of Shri MN Kandaswamy Pillai. Didn't note down the list. But just two things made the evening for me - one a pristine Thodi so characteristic of the Alathur Bani. Several of those phrases in the Alapanai - I've heard only in recordings. Thodi of the old..not many sing such Prayogams today.
And then Shri Sankaran. He was just amazing today. The way he played for the songs was just too good. Listened to a Ksheenamai recording by SSI in his famous airport concert a few days back. And Shri Sankaran accompanies in a way only he can. And to watch him in action today from considerably close quarters (its been a while since I've heard him live) quite made my day.
Concert details - hope someone adds..

apart from the fabulous misra chapu thani, the thing which sent me into raptures was the short and electrifying mohra which he played impromptu for the khanda jAthi dhruva thalam thiruppugazh ("paniyin thuli??? sorry i dont remember the exact name of it..please correct me if it is wrong")...
the eduppu was 6 beats after samam and i have heard him recite that mohra in one of his AIR interviews with Sri.B.M.Sundaram..He has told that this mohra was composed by palani anna especially for this thiruppugazh when he played for alathoor bros...
It was an absolutely wonderful ecstatic percussive display and i got a feeling that yesterday sankaran sir captured the form he exhibited in the 60s and the 70s...This is the first complete thiruppugazh concert am attending and certainly one of the best i have attended..
