. In his speech following his acceptance of the Harishankar Memorial Award, Sri Tiruchi Thayumanavan , the noted Mridangam and Konnakol artiste made a very significant observation. He said that we attend many musical performances. Obviously we enjoy them. But what is more important , is not the immediacy of the enjoyment but what we, the listeners, carry with us at the end of the day.
Smt. Varalakshmi Anandkumar gave a performance for Hamsadwani. on the 5th March. Nearly a week has passed since. But her elaboration of Madhyamavati, in particular, on that day, the authentic sancharas in the well trodden traditional path, her manodharma that opened up great vistas of beauty still linger in the memory. And naturally one is reminded of the perceptive statement by Sri Thayumanavan. Adiki Sugamu, in the excellent padanthara of her school naturally followed.
Glimpses of her exquisite form, was there earlier, in her alapana of Lathangi (Aparadhamula) and Bhairavi (Chintaya Mam Kanda Moola Kandam) .
