I was recently asked if I had lyrics for this Bharathiyar comp. - I managed to find this much on the web that corresponded to Nithyashree's version. Having listened to the song, I wondered if anyone could provide the meaning? Also, if anyone can provide the remainder of the lyrics, that'd be awesome. :)

OK, let me try just the first stanza: not a nuanced work from a scholar a la RShankar...if you like this sort of simple / literal meaning do let me know and I can try the rest as well.

Flood water (veLLam) rushes (pAyudu) splitting (uDaindu) the hill sides (pakka malaigaL) as if the eight (eTTu) directions (dikkugaL) splintered (sidaRi).
The world (universe) (anDam) sways (sAyudu) as the wind (kATRu), as if possessed (pEikonDu), beats it like a drum (takkai aDikkudu).

The rest (sounds like dhIm tarikiTa, takkat tadhingiTa, etc.) are added for effct - both poetic and sound effect!

( Only the first 3 stanzas are from his tanippADal entitled "mazhai"... the 4th/last stanza given by L-ji is part of another tanippADal called "puyarkATRu" which is a conversation between a man and his wife, with a first stanza that goes

wife: kATRaDikkudu kaDal kumuRudu
kaNNai vizhippAi nAyakanE
tUTRal kadavu sALaramellAm
toLaittaDikkudu paLLiyilE

which is then followed by the last stanza above).

Sridhar I had to laugh at that - and you would too, if you knew the truth!!

You got the gist anyway - that's what matters!

Nice try, Sridhar!

takkai is a drum which is what the wind is playing here.

Ravi,
You know that scholar or not, you are the best we have here :)

Meaning of the second verse:

Lightening splashes across the sky-the sea
With its furious waves, touches the sky,
The clouds beat away noisily-the 'kU' sound
Of the wind drills through the heavens and in
The skies we hear grunts of tALam beats-
caTTac caDa caTtac caDa...
Brother vIrA!
How did it all arrive from eight directions!

Thank you sridhar_rang; thank you arasi :) :)

For the last two stanzas, I think there is a part about heavenly sights when the persona addresses his younger brother. And in the last stanza the persona is asking for Parasakthi to show the way... asking for Devi's blessings...something about children...if we had this time...???

Sorry for bumping this again; I'm fascinated by this combination of poetry and music and want some more clarity if possible. :)

I heard O.S.Arun sing that in a Sun T.V programme few years back beautifully bringing the right effects.
