R.Suryaprakash-Dr.Hemalatha-A.V.Manikandan

It was a very nice concert that i heard recently in radio where my good friend RSP sang very nicely with heart and soul.

The list :

Paripalayamam-Reetigowla-Rupakam

Varanarada - Vijayashri-Adi

Nalvazhkaye - Kokilam-Adi

Eta Unara-Kalyani-Adi

RSP sang really well all the pieces. A striking feature of RSP is his Shruti Shudha which i always enjoy while on stage or off stage.
But restricting RSP to one hour is such a difficult task as his creative spark runs amock whenever he starts singing and this concert was also one such where i found himself hurrying a few aspects towards the end of the concert while trying to render the earlier pieces a bit relaxed. It doesnt happen only to RSP as i have seen many artistes find it difficult to curtail their creativity and get carried away by the spur of the moment. Anyway RSP's concert was in no way hindered by all these factors of time, place and surroundings. He was his usual self, gay abandon, exploratory and giving his best.

Paripalayamam started very well followed by Varanadarada in Vijayashree. next came the Kokilam raga alapana wherein he showed his skill for rendering rare ragas bearing testimony to his exploratory fervor. Nalvazhkaye by Dandapani Desikar was rendered very well. The reply by Dr.Hemalatha was very sweet and she rendered Kokilam raga with equal ease and felicity that RSP showed.

Kalyani raga and his good old Eta Vunara came as a very good foil for the raga prelude. Eta Vunara had all the elements of good pathantara, groomed rendition, chiselled to perfection.

Overall the concert was very satifsying with the accompaniments doing a very good job with special mention about Dr.Hemalatha whose violin sound was very soothing and was able to produce suswara throughout the concert.

A.V.Manikandan provided a good accompaniment right through the concert but being the live radio concert towards the end the sruti was a little higher than the actual shruti which was evident during the Tani avartanam. He played a good tani with typical Karaikudi Mani Sir Korvai in the end which i enjoyed.
It has been a big problem for artistes to maintain the sruti of the instrument at the same level because of the atmosphere in the studio. We have to learn from masters like UKS, Sankaran Sir and Mani Sir as to how they are able to maintain the sruti inside the AIR. Even with good maintenance of the instrument sometimes it fails.

But on the whole the concert was good to very good.

Only thing i need to tell RSP is that he may prepare well for such small programmes by following the principles of Three R's of Music like the Three R's used in literature.

Relax ---> Rehearse ---> Render

What are the 3 'R's of literature? The only set of 3 'R's I am aware of is with respect to schooling: Reading, (w)Riting, and (a)Rithmetic
