darupadi 101 (from Amar Chitra Katha)
King drupada performed a putrakAmESTi yAgam - from the sacrificial fire, two luminous beings emerged - the dark and lovely draupadi (also called krishNA) and the valorous driSTadyumana. When it was time, drupada arranged for draupadi's svayamvara - the task was to shoot an arrow into the eye of a fish that was hung from a hook on the ceiling while seeing its reflection in a bowl of water on the floor. One of the first to get up to attempt the feat was karNa - only to be halted when draupadi's scornful voice rang across the assembly, saying that she'd never marry the son of a charioteer (the insulted karNa walked away, and was consoled by duryodhana who offered him a kingdom, and made him a king). The assembly included the pANDava's who were in disguise, having just escaped death at duryodhana's hands (the episode of the lacquer palace), and lying low. arjuna was the only archer who was capable of succeeding at the task that was set, and predictably, he did. Even as he won draupadi, his cover/disguise was blown. The five brothers walked home, and called out to kunti to come out and check the prize that arjuna had won - before coming out to see what the prize was, kunti asked the five brothers to share the prize equally. To honor their mother's word, much to draupadi's initial dismay, all five brothers marry her, and she becomes pAncAli (the wife of 5 men).

When yudhiSTira performs the rAjsUya yagnya the whole world comes to hastinApur to see the beautiful capital and the amazing palace that has been constructed in what was once a wilderness. duryOdhana, who was a guest, watches the wonders of the city with mounting amazement and rising jealousy. He gets confused with what is real and what is a reflection in a room of mirrors, and, draupadi laughs at his discomfiture. This is thought to have been the last straw for duryodhana to handle, and he decides to set upon the course that would lead to the humiliation of the pANDavas and draupadi. So, with the help of his conniving uncle, he sets up the Satranj match which is rigged, leading yudhiSTira from one loss to another - he pledges and loses his kingdom, himself, his brothers, and then finally his wife while everyone else watches in helpless and hapless terror. When druapadi is lost in the game, duryOdhana asks his younger brother, duSSAsana to bring her to the court. When duSSAsana goes to drupadi's quarters, her hand maidens are dressing her, and her long tresses are still undone. When he informs her about the loss, she refuses to come, because, in her opinion, since yudhiSTira had (already) enslaved himself first, he did not have the right to pledge her. duSSAsana becomes enraged, and grabs her by her hair and drags her into the court where he tries to disrobe her. With krishNa's intervention, her honor is protected, and she hurls accusations at each of the kuru elders and holds them equally responsible for duryOdhana's actions because they enabled him by their mute participation. She then takes a frightful oath, swearing to leave her tresses unbraided until she annoints them with duSSAsanA's blood, and binds them with the entrails of his brothers. bhIma vows to kill him and break duryOdhana's thigh as well, and help draupadi in her oath. This is what is so effectively captured in pAncAli sabadam.
