Vidushi Jayanthi Kumaresh gave a very satisfying and soulful performance at the Ram Navami series this evening. The concert began amidst a heavy downpour and showers and thunder, much like tat of her husband Kumaresh! I got in late because of this and i think a Mohana composition was underway. someone who got that one kindly post the details of that.
This was followed by-
2. Vara Narada - Vijayashree- Thyagaraja
3. Ritigowla raga sketch, Nannu Vidachi- Thyagaraja
4. A beautiful and elaborate Shankarabharana raga aalapana, followed by Bhakti bhiksha meeyave - Thyagaraja , swaras (no neraval in any rendition)
5. An exquisite Ragam Thanam Pallavi in Kapi, ragamalika swaras in Shubhapantuvarali, Bindumalini and ?? and Bowli (??) , followed by Thani
6. Revathi raga- not sure of the composition.
Mangalam
It was a short concert as it began by only 7.15 PM followed by Vidushi Kalavathi Avadhoot's vocal recital.

Jayanthi is such a consummate musician and we only hope we hear more and more of her music and she (and the veena also!) gets as much popularity as her vidwat really deserves.

Melakarta - I agree that Smt. JK is a great vidushi - another worthy scion of an illustrious family! Did she sing the pallavi (as she usually has done when I have heard her) and explain the eDuppu and tALam? If so, what was it? The rEvati composition was not bhO SambhO, was it?

Oh sorry she did sing the pallavi. It was in Khanda Triputa , arai edam and was modelled on the line of the thyagaraja kriti - "intha soukhyma manine"..given my age and memory i cant figure out now the exact structure of the pallavi. Will post if i remember or if someone else was there at the concert pls post. No that was not shambho..but a very familiar kriti...old age is really a bad thing when it comes to the neurons, i tell you :-)

Arjun Kumar on Mridhangam
Srisailam on Ghatam
Arun Kumar on Morsing

I really enjoyed the whole concert. Arjun kumar was superb and arun kumar sparkled with morsing. I loved Reethi Gowla Alapana, Kapi ragam and thanam. I could identify these ragas only ;) .Thanam left me asking for more. I think Pallavi also had Vasanta ?.

Rain and Thunder was constantly threatening to hijack the concert. But luckily it did not play spoilsport.

Even i thought the concert was 6:30 start. But it was scheduled to be a 2 hour concert 7:15-9:15

* First song was ra ra rajeeva lochana - mohana
* Pallavi ragas were shubhapantuvarali, bindumalini, vasantha and vasanthi
* The bhajan was NOT revathi - she mentioned some other raga similar to revathi (I forget it now)
* She did sing the pallavi

Superb concert. Her gamakams were fascinating. Pity it was not a 3+ hour concert.
