It was the first concert of Vid Shanthala in Bangalore. I had heard about her playing, but had never actually got a chance to listen to her, and i was not disappointed! It was an extremely good concert. Her style of playing and choice of songs is very similar to her brother Shashank, though i dont mean to take away any credit from her :) . All the songs were very well treated in an unhurried pace.

She had good support on the violin frm Sri Ganesh Prasad and also the percission dept. The thani avarthanam was very short, just about 5-10 mins.

Looking forward to more of her concerts. I am sure with more experience and exposure to concerts she will definitely become a top ranked flautist.

Sounds like a good concert. We do not have that many flautists among women these days--can't think of any performing women but for the famed Sikkil school.
For a debut performance (?), she got excellent support. Of course, Ganesh prasad has accompanied Shashank often which would have been an advantage.

Arasi, there is another lady flautist by name Jayaprada Ramamurthy (based out of Hyderabad, I think). I would strongly recommend her to you. She is excellent.

arasi, Kum. shantala has been performing in madras for a while now. this is defly not her first concert.

amongst lady flautists we have had in all times, i can recollect the name of one Smt. T R Navaneetham, a very senior vidushi. I think she still lives in madras, though i would expect her to be very old to be performing. I have heard her programmes telecasted over AIR and DD. Then there is Mayavaram Saraswathi Ammal (aka Mayavaram Pappa) who is also a seasoned flautist but is too old presently. And then the sikkil sisters and then Smt Mala and Smt. Jayaprada as mentioned by mahavishnu.

i m sure there are others as well.

Smt. Navaneetam had a scar on her forehead from the hefty paan dabba of an irate teacher thrown at her..
Smt.Kesi who learnt from mAli also comes to mind, while listing women flautists..
