HK Venkatram, ArunPrakash, Bangalore Amrit

Songlist - Incomplete !

enthani nE - mukhAri - Thyagaraja neraval & swara @ ‘kanulAra sEvinci kammani phalamula nosagi’
SadAchaleswaram - Bhoopalam - MD- (ANS)
Nennurunchi - Malavi - ANS
MAmava PattAbhirAma - Manirangu- ANST
SwAminAtha ParipAlaya - Nattai - MD
RTP - Kanada- Kanda Jathi, Triputa Thalam, Ragamalika in SAma, Yaman Kalyani, Revathi
MAnasa Sancharare - SAma-SB
Thillana in Behag
Mangalam on Behag too.

My picks -
Outstanding and a really moving Bhoopalam.
A very brisk Malavi, Swaram singing was fantastic
Thani for Manirangu song
Kanada RTP - The best thing here was he was dwelling on sublower octave for more than a minute when he was singing swaram for Revathi
Nice encapsulation of Mangalam Kosalendraya Slokam after Behag Thillana. It looked like people were expecting him to sing PavamAna and they didnt move out of their place.

The sound system was a bit bad irritating TMK very often. When he was at the peak of Kanada raga alapana, he ended up saying " Kutcheri mudinjapram dhaan mike sari aagum pola irukku" (Looks like the system will be alright only after the concert ends!)

Note about RTP: It was well past 9:15 pm when he actually started the KAnada alapana!

A truly outstanding concert. The comments that I have given here are not to eulogize TMK, for I had heard TMK live, only once before this concert, that too 2 years before!

hmmm.. wonderful concert indeed.. the mike though as mentioned had its screechy moments..

the begada krithi was rather small and as it usually is, was sandwiched between two big krithis, so I forgot about the begada number too until braindrain pointed it out to me..

the krithis was thanavari thanamu by thyagaraja..

A link for those interested in lyrics of thyagaraja krithis..

3 cheers for the author of the blog for his fabulous work!!!

The mike system was very funny as there was a lag between action on stage and the sound propogation, especially at the back of the auditorium. We could visually see TMK finishing the swara avartanams but hear the same after a certain time lag !!!!Somone advised me to sit closer to the stage. That solved the problem. Could enjoy the concert only from the Malavi raagam.

The concert was outstanding by TMK and team...Mallavi brigas were breath taking. Manirangu was calm and soothing. Excellent team work and support by Venkataram, Arun Prakash and Amrit to make this a concert memorable one.

Apart from the mike problems, there was another annoying thing happening....one of the organisers creating unnecessary confusion by moving on stage, off stage, controlling the sound system, trying to talk to the artistes in the midst of the concert.....Not sure what he was trying to achieve... He was quite distracting !!!!!

My impressions of this concert

- Entaninne in mukhari was sung soulfully with a nice neraval & swaras. Neraval & swaras are in different places of sahitya - neraval in kannulara sevinchi & swaras in ina kula pati
- Tanavariti, begada krithi was in madhyama kalam. I heard same keerthana sung by G.Ravikiran few weeks ago, in same venue. My opinion is that Ravi sung same keerthana in less pacy kala pramanam, and TMK's version was little fast. In fact, i still remember graceful sangathis in anu pallavi & charanam of ravi's version.
- bhoopalam alapana & keerthana - both were in vilamba kalam. I am not used to listening this keerthana in such tempo, and due to common swara sthanas with subha pantuvarali, many places it resembled that raga.
- Mamava pattabhirama was outstanding, and this is one of the keerthana close to my heart, thanks to wonderful rendition by sangeetha saraswathi DKP Amma. TMK's rendition was apt. The neraval was very special - since he took a lengthy line.
- RTP - particularly the pallavi was interesting and outstanding. Minor correction in Jayan's pallavi wording - "varame" sounded like "parame"

A cassette of DKP has this song. PMI on the mridangam. She has put such nice SWARAPRASTARAM, tani Avaratanam has been played by PMI after this rendition.

Why not? I was wondering if I had to consult an ENT.. Thanks braindrain.. Sound System can be blamed I think... In fact that was how I missed Begada Kriti!!

yeah .. braindrain you can very well blame the sound system... but someone like me may ask.. what sound system? I would call it an 'unsound' system... ;-)

Hari, I agree with your impressions of Bhoopalam , seemed like Subhapantuvarali at some places to me too especially in the alapana, but then I thought it might just be the fault of my untrained ears.

I would like to add one thing though about the manirangu, his nereval was unique and wonderfully paced into the final cresendo.. I thought the build up was while being unique, masterfull..

From what you are all saying, I can imagine how badly the sound system affected your listening experience. We all know that Krishna is a stickler for these things and very rightfully so. He should refuse to sing in concert halls that are notorious for bad sound systems. If he wants data, we have enough data collectively here. A threat by a musician of his stature would definitely effect the needed change.

I am *not* an expert, high on enthusiasm-low on talent. I used to be a huge *fan* of TMK. I travelled across town for the concert - only one this season by TMK. My impressions:
* Very good RTP - left midway during the pallavi
* Nice alapana for malavi
* Neraval for Manirangu - awesome - HK Venkatram was very good too. Unfortunately the gold standard is DKP's awesome manirangu - what swarams - in fact the end here were similar notes - arohanam and avarohanam
* Bhoopalam was ati ati ati vilambakalam - could not enjoy it. I have noticed that with every passing year it is getting slower and slower.
* Why does TMK have to be different ? Is it for the sake of it. I am not a fan of starting with mukhari and having swaminatha past midway. I am a fan of Ariyakudi, KVN, LGJ style of concerts - that is where RKS concerts feel so complete and wholesome
* TMK had a particularly memorable concert on SIFA's 25th anniversary in San Jose. Kanada varnam, sahana, saveri, sankarabharanam being the main ones. don't know with such talent and voice range - why such experiments are being performed

This season the concerts I enjoyed very much (in no particular order)
Sanjay
Lalgudi Siblings
Veenai Jayanthi
Malladi Brothers
TVS @ Gayana Samaja
GJR and Ramh @ Gayana Samaja
Rajalakshmi on Veena @ Gayana Samaja (half concert)

I missed U Srinivas, Bombay Jayashri. Will be missing Nedunuri (truly regret it) - and will be looking forward to ravikiran

The mike/sound system was terribly bad throughout.(TMK's voice not heard????) .
As a prelude, the audience went through an endurance test for about 15 min when
TMK set sruti to the two tambura's (mini and maxi) and the concert began around 7 pm.

The alapana for Sadachale sounded more like ShubaPanthuvarali (and Kumudakriya at few
points). Infact it was only during swarams when TMK was not using Ma , I realised he was not singing
shubapantu but something else. Was he applying the concept of 'griha swaras' (which he seems
to be innovating off late) I dont know. Anyone in the know may highlight this. Somehow it did
not sound like conventional Bhupalam.
