Ah, what a lovely song..! It is a joy to read, listen to (or even translate!) such a masterpiece.. the tune it is set to is an ancient mettu, which has several sets of sahitya set to it..
The subject of the song is not the deity, but his muraLI-gAnam..
P: mOhanam-ayi tava muraLI-gAnam ahO! mOdayati kam iha na bhuvanE :
Bewitching is your reed's music, ahO! whom does it not please (here) in this world..
A: dEha-vijita -mAra! divya-mAnuSa-vESa !!
Your form defeats cupid, O divine one, in human guise!
(here it is a case of the figure of speech called virOdhAbhAsa - apparent contradiction - the form is mAnuSa, but divya; manuSa but can excel that of the god manmatha)
C1: nIrasOpi viTapI nishamanEna tarasA cAru kisalayitO jAyatE nava iva
even a dried up tree puts forth new sprouts, anew; anon,upon listening to it..
sAranga-tatirapi shAntOlapa-kabaLA nIrajAkSa! bhavati nibhrta citragatEva
O lotus-eyed one! the deer herd, resting their cud-chewing; are transfixed, as in a picture..
2: matta-vAraNa-vara-mastaka-bhEdanE datta-mati:+api+ISha tarasA kila kEsarI
given to splitting the temples of (mighty) elephants in rut, the lion
cittagata-mOhana cira-vismrta-BhAvOtha! sattama nivasati sAdhur-bata! tatraiva
when your enchantment entered its(lion's) mind,O sat-tama(ultimate essence)! it forgets the natural (predatory)instinct, and just sits there, Lo!
and now for my favourite caraNa..
3: parama-puruSa! jaDa-pASaNa-nikarOpi paritO dravati hanta! parikarNanEna
O supreme lord! even the insentient boulders all around, melt upon listening to it..
taruNI-janamOhakam tadiha samajanIti paramadya kimu citram padmanAbha murArE!
that it infatuates young women, is common knowledge, what is so strange about it, Padmanabha! killer of Mura..
This one song is enough to establish the merit of the composer, as a lyrcist, with a kavi-hrdaya equalling that of great poets like bhAsa and kAlidAsa..
MDR singing it is like seeing a piece of art being given birth..
