Kji has already introduced us to the magic of Smt. Sakuntala Narasimhan - I thought we need to have a thread for this very versatile artist who is adept at HM, CM, and is an acclaimed author as well:

Simple.. she isn't asked...cmlover wrote:very very impressive!
Why does she not perform during the music season at Chennai?
She has performed thrice in the academy, upon invitation; once a lec-dem on gamakas and the differences in their usage in the northern and southern styles; once a full-fledged hindustani concert(where she sang a bandish in shaNmukhapriya!) and another time when she gave a lec-dem and won an award.
She is unpretentious, doesn't promote herself, and doesn't solicit performance opportunities..
With such evil vices, need I say more..?

Re: Sakuntala Narasimhan
Dear friends,
Rasikalaya London held a lec-dem/workshop by Smt Sakuntala Narasimhan last Saturday, 25th June.
The topic was: 'Understanding Hindustani music from a Carnatic perspective'
Related topics: Bridging the Carnatic-Hndustani divide -- do the twain meet, should they? AND 'Carnatic and Hindustani music -- what can each learn from the other?'
The session was simply brilliant. Sakuntala interspersed technical details with interesting anecdotes from her own experiences with the greats of music, from both CM and HM.
Some of the highlights from her presentation:
- evolution of the two systems
- main differences (and similarities): gamakas, forms, grammar, language, accompaniments, etc
- how the two systems have borrowed ragas from each other
- understanding each other
- self jugalbandi: this was a unique aspect of the lec-dem. Being a top-class artiste in both the systems, she demonstrated a self-jugalabandi, where she alternated between the two types of singing. The ragam she chose was Saraswathi.
- and the various anecdotes about learning from gurus, her comments on learning music, etc.
- she also sang a snippet of a Sahana padam (which she has learnt from Smt Brinda). Aha, that was some experience! I closed my eyes, and could feel the presence of Brindamma in the room.
It was a lovely evening, enjoyed by all.
I simply cannot understand why this vidushi has not received the recognition she richly deserves. I sincerely hope the rasika community gets more opportunities to listen to this great vidushi, who is a repository of so much musical knowledge.

Chennai Sabhas have done a great service to CM by not inviting her to the Mecca and diluting her music
