I am surprised why nobody is talking about Punya Srinivas. She is really superb. My friends who heard her in Annanagar Music Circle told me that she is going to be the next super star in veena. No wonder even Smt.Padmavathy Ananthagopalan felicitated her on that day and spoke very highly of her veena.
Punya has played in films as well. She is a disciple of veena maestro,E.Gayathri's mother,Kamala Aswathama.

Last Sunday (Pongal, Jan 15, 2012), I happened to tune in to AIR Chennai's FM Gold, and was blown away by a veena rendition of dAkShAyanI abhayAmbikE, Muttuswami Dikshitar's kriti in tODi. While a tad brisk, the artiste's rendition of the kRti was impeccable and kalpanA svaras super-attractive. It was only at the end of the concert did I gather the musician was Smt Punya Srinivas.

Youtube features one of her tODis at

and, astoundingly, some Western classical

Very talented artiste indeed! Listening to her would dispel any stereotypes one might hold about the abilities of those who've experimented with fusion and other genres to do justice to Carnatic music.

There's a piece on her in TOI from December 2011
