Thank you, Coolji! Looking forward to listening to NRK-AMS combination especially.
Here's TNK-Sriram-Sankaran rendering a focused pallavi: http://www.sendspace.com/file/i9scxy
No ragamaliga stuff, just plain SM for 30 minutes with a beautiful pallavi neraval and swaraprastharam especially. Trichy Sankaran's thani is an added bonus. I think 10:00 to 10:30 in the alapanai best demonstrates the life of SM.
SM seems to be very amenable to thanam singing/playing as well, probably because it allows the artiste considerable liberty to use plain notes. I find it interesting that many people can't seem to identify a particular melody in SM, and I agree to a great extent that it doesn't seem to have many characteristic phrases, piDis, etc. Would you agree, then, shaNmugapriya also doesn't have any coherent melody? I think the difference between these two sampoorna ragas and other major ones like tODi, shankarAbharaNam, etc, is that the former do not have very many famous compositions from which an artiste can draw phrases and paint a melody, whereas the latter ragas are abundant in compositions, which makes it easier for artistes to avoid arohanam-avarohanam combinatorial exercises and actually sing something "meaningful". However, I'm a great fan of ragas like SM and SP, because even in the absence of any phrase-based melody, I think they have a lot of emotional content (for me, anyhow). On the other hand, I often find pantuvarALi alapanais listless and colourless even though the raga has numerous compositions and lots of specific characteristic phrases. I think it all comes down to what an imaginative, perceptive artiste can do with the vast expanse of such sampoorna ragas. Or maybe very simply our own taste
Have any of you heard MMI's RTP in SM? That's a lovely piece too.

Well, I will definitely hear all the tracks you gave, coolkarni and bilahari. I will tell you my thoughts in a day or two. Thank you, both of you, for encouraging me! I am still a bit sad that you all didn't upload even one piece sung by my favorite legend Semmangudi! Didn't he sing even one RTP? or just an elaborate composition? or even a tukkada or thillana? I will be satisfied even if a Viruttam is there!(I've never heard him sing Viruttams either! I don't know why!) =(

I have enjoyed this veena rendition. Veena Kinhal singing along was a bonus.

Aha, I KNEW there'd be a Kalyanaraman track lurking around the corener! Thank you, Coolji!
Sreeni, will definitely listen to the veena rendition too. By the way, the Emani-MSG pallavi in this ragam is extraordinary--one of my all time favourites.
Srinivas, I too wish for an SSI track in this raga, but there isn't even a SM tukkada in all his concerts I've collected.

Sreeni Rajarao sir,

Coolkarni ji,
I surrender! I just can't stop listening to Nedunuri's RTP! Fantastic! He is the king of this raga! You really proved to me that Simhendramadhyamam is one of the best ragas in the world! I really like it. Thanks a lot to you!! Simhendramadhyamam is on my top 5 favorites. I just can't believe that a raga in my hit list figured out in my favorites! Thanks a lot! I owe it all to you. Thanks for sharing the clips. I will also listen to Alathoor's track and tell you.
About this RTP, the ragam and thanam are the best in the world!
And the pallavi, what a pallavi!
I listened to it many times! 'nI padhamulE gathiyani nammithi srI rAmachandra' is fabulous. How cleverly Vidhwan Nedunuri has incorporated swarAksharams into it. 'pa dha' of padhamulE has the swaras 'pa dha' and 'ga' of gathiyani has the higher gAndhAram. What a combination! Excellent indeed!
I urge all Simhendramadhyamam lovers to definitely listen to this RTP! Your appreciation will rise!
And an ecstatic 'shrI venkata' before it! Really nice, sir. Thanks a lot!
Bilahari,

One of the finest simm madhyamam singer is Shri TN SeshagOpAlan. I love his rendering of asaindAdum mayiLonru , OVK's composition
Also 2 beautiful RTP's that are very memorable:
1. About 3 to 4 years back , Shri TNS sang a simm madhyamam RTP in a thematic kavi kunjara bharathi concert held in annamalai manram, simply breathtaking sangatis.
2. In our rasikas concert at manakkAl's house , suryaprakash sang a beautiful RTP in simm madhyamam , especially the thAnam with a left right combination of R.Sankaranarayanan and MA.Sundareshwaran . A simply superb musical exposition.

I think my father also acquired some concerts from the same person and the terms were similarly 'fluid'coolkarni wrote:Way Back, I paid 450 Rs to transfer 4.5 hours of recording on to "my" blank tapes , from a gentleman at Besantnagar. It was a meeting that ended in a fracas. The gentleman asked for one price when I gave the tapes and doubled the price, when I took Delivery.
And he would snigger at my poor quality Meltrack Tapes.![]()

The first time I heard Simhendramadhyamam was on an old Bombay Sisters' tape. It had Asaindhadum Mayil (OV) on it. The song is close to my mother's heart and I loved listening to it for a while, but the song that really captivated me was Ninne Nambiddenayya Sri Rama by Mysore Vasudevachar. The first time I heard this was on an old Santhanam tape - I think it was "Mysore Vasudevacharya Kritis". Santhanam's rendition is par excellence - given that the raga's grim, sad mood suits his soulful renditions, listening to it was memorable. I guess this ragam ranks with Revati and Mayamalavagowla in its grimness, with the flavour being similar. Love the ragam - per me, it what Keeravani could aspire to be (pun intended).
Since then I heard a superb rendition by Sikkil Gurucharan, who I think is one of the better youngsters.
