Place to go if you want to ask someone identify raga, tala, composer etc or ask for sāhitya (lyrics) or notations or translations.

Is the song popularized by MSS necessarily an invocation song? Is it in praise of Ganeshji?

As far as I can tell, it is an invocation, so yes, it is performed at the beginning. Additionally, it is addressed to GOD, and not to any particular deity. I will go as far as to say that it is a truly non-denominational invocation, for the characteristics described can't be ascribed to any one deity, but to a (male) supernatural power in general.

Right on target Shankar!
It was so popular in the olden days as sung by MS herself..
Why do you say Male deity?
Isn't that song by naamakkal Ramalingam piLLay?

Here are the lyrics from karnatik.com (from Lji, I am sure), and the composer is Suddhananda Bharati. The bolded word made me think it was a male deity.

Thanks so much; I wondered if it was just a popular invocation piece due to the fact that it was in hamsadhvani... Thanks all of you.

Have sung it many times as invocation when I was a child. A beauty of a song. Most suited for a start of an event or concert. I don't see why it cannot be sung in a concert later too.

Ravi,
aRivu, uNmai ANBUM tiruvum. inbu is inbam. anbu is how we sang it. With knowledge, truth and beauty, SB asks for love--the totality of all brings bliss (inbam) anyway...
