Let us not go overboard on censorship. Freedom of Expression is vital for Democracy as long as it is not venomous or destructive. Of late we have been quite tolerant and please do not quote previous events. We are more concerned with the decorum and the format of expressing dissent. Some do use a crude language (since for all of us (barring Nick :) ) English is a second language. We will try to edit without destroying the 'sense' as far as possible if it is brought to our attention. We do not want to destroy the 'humour' element as arasi correctly points out since I personally believe that it will relieve tensions and add a few more years to our lives. Again some of the harmless light banter we engage in (I plead guilty) is intended to promote comradeship and a community feeling. We do congratulate and commiserate with our membership on their signal successes and times of hardship. Some of you are too serious and resent anything other than erudite CM pronouncements at this Forum. Unfortunately our scholarly vidvaans obliige us only once in a blue moon. Just bear with us and ignore the posts in a lighter vein. We will make sure that it does not go out of control!

We are not perfect. But we will get there with all of your cooperation.

Thank you

Do I think anonymity helps people let loose with their lips and say things which they may not in a public place? Absolutely. I think anonymity on internet is a grossly misused comfort.

So, has this happened here? Certainly. It seems more so off late - but I think there is generally a cycle to all this.

Have the moderators admonished people every time? No - but this is not as easy as it sounds. There is a line of tolerance for each of us. But all of us expect moderators to come down when our subjective line of tolerance is crossed by a post. In other words, each one of us want moderators to behave "like us", but each one of us have differing views - hence our expectations can never be fulfilled. Some posts may cross the line of tolerances of most of us, and those are easy to moderate. Some others - get more tricky. Hence this will be an imperfect world.

If some of the active posters do not come down on posts that your perceive as harsh and slimy, does that mean they have given their tacit approval? No.

Are they taking sides if they comment on one, but not other? No - please dont be quick to judge.

But if they or someone defends a harsh post, you can disagree with them and certainly voice disapproval - but not because they chose not to post (you didnt say anything when XYZ said something, but now you are....).

For example, I used to be more active in this regard on sangeetham - asking people to tone down (particularly first time posters who register and post to bring down someone, or voice personal grievances). But that was like 10 years ago - I simply don't have the energy now to intervene most of the time (honest truth). Yes, many posts prick , but I sigh, and ignore it. I never liked harsh criticisms on artists on public forums - but doesn't mean i expressed by disapproval every time. If I had a $ for every time .... :-) !!.

Censorship from moderators may not be good. But self-censorship is very good. Freedom of Expression comes with responsibility. Let us not forget that.

Agreed with the points you have mentioned.

It is a free world and it is impossible to moderate in this internet blog world and insist on civility of postings - especially due to user anonymity. Over time, the users can distill out the postings of rasikas who provide "good" information and who is a disgruntled rasika making personal attacks with inflammatory comments.

In the recent episode was based on some incomplete information, and provocative postings, there was a huge follow-up discussion by some of the seasoned folks of this forum who have expressed balanced opinions on issues. So, a rumor/gossip or some incomplete data almost became the prevailing truth. That is the sad part.

BTW, on a personal level, I am not looking to musicians with the possible exception of MS Subbulakshmi for inspiration for Bakthi.

This is an interesting statement.
What previous events are you referring to? Based on your statement, can we assume moderators did play mischief in earlier times?

Anyways, good to see mods have reformed themselves. Let's hope they stay that way.
