I still don't understand this line " navarasa kaTitaTi shobhita vallabha ".

navarasa - Nine Rasas
kaTitaTi - Waist
shobhita - Shining
vallabha - Lord

Could anyone enlarge upon it ?

Avnipriya,

Here is my take on the whole composition - slightly different from the one Parimal posted, and may help you...Rajani or Keerthi can fix any mistakes.

According to Needamangalam Sri Krishnamurthy Bhagavatar, in this composition, Sri OVK imagines krishNa caught red-handed by Yashoda with butter in his hands that he hastily wipes on his hips to hide the evidence, trying to charm his way out, dancing eyes, dazzling beauty, sweet innocence and all!

pallavi
marakata maNimaya cElA gOpAla
madana kOTi saundarya vijita
paramAnanda gOvinda mukunda

Oh protector/guardian (pAla) of cows/senses (gO), Oh Govinda whose external appearance (cElA) resembles that of an emerald (marakata) gemstone (maNimaya), whose beauty rivals/vanquishes (vijita) countless (kOTi - literally, crores) cupids (madana), you are the granter of freedom (mukundA) and supreme (parama) bliss (Ananda).

anupallavi
dhara karatala muraLI navanIta vadana kamala Ananda hasana dhara
nayana kamala Ananda jvalita mama hrdaya kamala nirantara jagannAtha

Holding (dhara) a flute (muraLI) and some butter (navanIta) in the palm of your hands (karatala), and sporting (dhara) a beatific (Ananda) smile (hasana) on your lotus (kamala)-like face (vadana), and your lotus (kamala)-like eyes dancing/gleaming (jvalita) with joy (Ananda) - that is how you reside eternally (nirantara - without end) in my (mama) heart (hrudaya-kamala), Oh Lord (nAtha) of the universe (jagat).

caraNam
mAnita guNa shIlA dayALA mAm pAlaya varabAlA gOpAlA
muraLIdharA nanda mukunda mama mAnasa pada sarasIruha dala yugaLA Adi madhyAnanta rahita vaibhava ananta kalyANa guNA mama rakSaka

Oh gOpAla, the exemplary (vara) child (bAlA), revered (mAnita) as a repository of sterling character (guNa SIlA), please protect (pAlaya) me (mAm)! One who holds (dhara) a flute (muraLI) you are the delightful (nanda) granter of freedom (mukunda) whose feet (pada yugaLa - both/pair of feet) that are as soft and tender as the petals (daLa) of a lotus (sarasIruha) are firmly planted in my (mama) mind (mAnasa). Oh Lord whose grandeur (vaibhava) lies in the fact that you are sans (rahita) a beginning (Adi), a middle (madhya) and an end (anta), and are qualified by an unending (ananta) list of auspicious (kalyANa) moral qualities (guNA). My (mama) keeper/protector (rakshaka)!

madhyamakAla sAhityam
vanaja nayana rAdhAmukha madhukara rasika

The lotus (vanaja) eyed (nayana) discriminating connoisseur (rasika) of the bee (madhukara) on rAdhA face (mukha) [1]!

rasikavara rAsa vilAsa nava rasa kaTitaTa shObhita vallabha

The ideal (vara) appreciator (rasika) and participant (vilAsa) in rAs krIDa, the Lord (vallabha) whose waist (kaTitaTa) is adorned (SObhita) with fresh (nava) butter (rasa) that you have hastily wiped on your hips!

nava vrajayuvatI manOllAsa

The one who beguiles (ullAsA) the minds and hearts (mana) of young (nava) women (yuvati) of brindAvan (vraj)!

kanaka maNimaya nUpura dharaNA

One who wears (dharaNA) golden (kanaka) anklets (nUpura) studded with gemstones (maNimaya).

kamala bhavanuta shAshvata caraNA

One whose feet (caraNA) are praised (nuta) at all times (SASvata) by the one who was created (bhava) in a lotus (kamala) - i.e., brahmA.

kalpita kali kaluSajvara mardana

One who destroys (mardana) the foul (kaluSa) illness/fever (jvara) of kaliyug (kali) that is a consequence (kalpita) of our own sinful acts.

kALinga nartana katitha janArdana

Oh Lord who dances (nartana) on the serpent, kALIya (kALinga), you are said (katitha) to be the one without births (janArdana)!

FOOTNOTE
[1] The bee, or the maker (kara) of honey (madhu) on rAdhA's face refers to her lips, that were supposed to be as sweet as nectar to kiss.

Ravi, i checked in my sanskrit dictionary. it says that rasa is also used for metal. But i am just not satisfied, especially because of the nava prefix used... it sounds simply like the nine rasas,,, but then the line doesnt make sense.. what do you think?

Krishnaa - I am going entirely by the explanantion for this composition given by Needamangalam Sri Krishnamurthy Bhagavatar (who was a descendant of Sri OVK, and used to propagate Sri OVK's compositions via the medium of harikatha) - and his explanation was the butter stains that were around krishNa's waist where he'd hastily wiped his butter-laden hands in an attempt to get rid of incriminating evidence - and these fresh (nava) stains of butter appeared to add to the Lord's beauty for both yaSOda who saw this, and Sri OVK who visualized this.

This is what the Cologne Lexicon gives as the myriad meanings for the word 'rasa': m. (ifc. f. %{A}) the sap or juice of plants , Juice of fruit , any liquid or fluid , the best or finest or prime part of anything , essence , marrow RV. &c. &c. ; water , liquor , drink MBh. Ka1v. &c. ; juice of the sugar-cane , syrup Sus3r. ; any mixture , draught , elixir , potion R. BhP. ; melted butter etc. etc. etc.

Sri OVK was also extremely well versed in sanskrit and in his compositions, it is not unusual to find rare meanings for commonly used words, and rare words to describe common things. For instance, he uses the word 'rOhishajA' to describe vaLLi, the consort of muruga - meaning 'one born of a deer' - which is apparently an unusual usage.
