Hari,
Can you please change the word Bujat to pUchat, both in the title of the topic and the posting? I am sure Lji will have the words to this one. The first line, pUchat SAm kOn tU gOrI - means - the dark-hued krishNa (SAm/SyAm) enquires (pUchat), 'Oh fair maiden (gOrI), who (kOn/kaun) are you (tU)?'

The Surdas poem is bUjhat ("bUjhat" would be the Braja bOli so I think this would be the equivalent of "pUchat" in Hindi ), considering the ensuing questions he asks of Radha -- ...........here is the quick & easy translation peeled off the net, with some modifications...
Krishna said, 'O fair beauty, who are you?
Where do you live? Whose daughter are you?
I never yet saw you in the lanes of Braj.'
Radha said, 'What need have I to come this way?
I play by my own door/area. (khElati rahati Apane pauri)
But I hear that some son of Nanda
is in the habit of stealing butter and curds.'
Krishna said, 'Look, why should I appropriate
anything that's yours? Come, let's play together.'
Suradasa says: By his honeyed words,
Krishna, the crafty prince of amorists,
beguiled Radha and put her at ease.
Lakshmanji -- I heard the song again from MSS -- the word seems "bujhat" to me.........

O my god! i didnt take heed to carefully read the lyrics! this is such a beautiful song! i heard it when i watched rAs lIlA in Varanasi. it was sung simply wonderfully!! i just realised its the same song i like so much when shyama-priya gave the rough meaning! i have a recording of the song... i remember sri kRSNa and SrI rAdhA singing this to each other,,, it was really baeutiful!

krishnaa - yes I meant pUchat (c as in cAr, and ch as in pUchnA)..I remember it as pUchat...I have to listen to Smt. MSS's version again - I am sure she has the word right. As far as I knew, bUjhnA was 'to perceive' (as in the use 'jAn bUjhke') - I was not aware of it meaning (even in brajbhAsA) ask/enquire...

I found some part of my notes (not all though) - this verse is the third in a set of verses from the sUrsAgar describing the first meeting between krishNa and rAdhA - the first verse describes krishNa and the second rAdhA in the midst of other girls on the banks of the yamunA, and the third is this one (I do have it written down as pUchat...
but can't find the rest of this verse).

Something I found digging around.........
The First Meeting Of Radha And Krishna
Krishna went playing in the lanes of Braj,
a yellow silk garment round his waist,
holding a top and a string to spin it with,
a crown of peacock-feathers adorning his head
his ears with charming ear-rings decked,
his teeth flashing brighter than the sun's rays,
his limbs anointed with sandalwood-paste.
On the Yamuna bank he chanced to see Radha;
a tika mark of turmeric on her brow,
dressed in a flowing skirt and blue blouse,
her lovely long wreathed hair dangling behind,
a stripling, fair, of beauty unsurpassed
with her, a bevy of fair milkmaids:
Krishna's eyes met hers;
love woke in his heart,
says Suradasa, bewitched by her,
he gazed and gazed.

That conk on the head must've hurt.rshankar wrote:I found some part of my notes (not all though) - this verse is the third in a set of verses from the sUrsAgar describing the first meeting between krishNa and rAdhA - the first verse describes krishNa and the second rAdhA in the midst of other girls on the banks of the yamunA, and the third is this one (I do have it written down as pUchat...but can't find the rest of this verse).

Some corrections, if I may, Krishna:
1) kabahu --> kahun (nowhere)
2) vrajta --> vrajata mE Avat ( why do I need to come to Vraja - because I play here by my door/area)
3) Lakshman-ji has the last line correct ---> sur shyam sUrdAs prabhu rasika shirOmaNi bAt nA bhurai rAdhAkA gOri ...........all these corrections as sung by MSS.....link below.

krishnaa wrote:kabahUn - any time
dEkhI nahI kabahu vrija kOri
i hane never seen you in the streets of vraja.
kAhe ku ham vraja me Avat - thats the corrects one
I beg to differ.
MSS says kahun...... not kabahu.... to my ears....."I have not seen you (dekhat nahi) anywhere (kahun) in the streets of vraja" - literally, but "I have never seen you in the streets of Vraja" will also work...
also.....it is vrajata mE Avat......
