I don't agree with this idea, and sometimes regret having such a revealing ID here! :| :)

Just for fun.. Let us see: Assume, there are 100000 Srinivasaraghavans in Chennai with the same spelling. How many are interested in Carnatic Music? 10000. How many that can play the Veena. May be 100. How many of these 100 woud answer 'Yes' to the question "Do you write music related fantasy stories as a hobby'. One and only one :)

vasanthakokilam,

I mean it shouldn't be mandatory to mention one's name in every post or include one's real name in their ID here. :)

There is a scene in the movie , where the hero tracks the heroine in a similar fashion , giving an example like you did for srinivasrgvn .

My view is that it need not be mandatory.
Being direct may be with a nickname (like carnatakam for kalki) gives a legitimacy in the music circle.
But when you expect some reply for an argument from say an artist who is in this forum , whatever
great your substance is, the artist will not consider you seriously when you are anonymous.

Following a similar logic it has been shown that there can be 100 million stars with planets where life can exist and each one of them may contain a Srinivasaraghavan :)

Rajaglan, I do not think that is necessarily true.

May be signature option can be enabled and those interested can display their name.

Thank goodness there are so many Nicks with an interest in carnatic music, and I can remain certain of my anonymity!

There are many good reasons for not publishing one's actual identity anywhere on the internet. Even though a small forum may appear to be a fairly close community, it is open to the entire world, and, thanks to google, easily accessible.

but
I met a fellow forumite at this year's Cleveland Arasdhana who refused to give not only the real name but even the user name from the site.
I wonder if he tells his workmates who he is? Or his family? This seems to be taking anonymity too far!

The only time I find anonymity confusing on the forum is when our music-professional members post with the assumption that we know who they are. Mridangam, for instance, sings his posts, so the confusion does not arise. Professionals are entitled to anonymity too --- but then they should not expect to be recognised!

Srini--the one Srinivasaraghaven we all know in Chennai :)

 That would make it a signature tune. (Sorry, Nick, found the above hard to resist)

I had to read three times before I got your point.

I won't, on this occasion, edit the typo in my post... it's just too good :D

Singing off now... or at least making space again for the main topic.

There are many reasons that people may desire on-line anonymity. Occasionally, they may even be bad reasons --- but, good or bad, I think we have no choice but to respect them.
