I was finally able to put the "swaravistaram cuts" in eSnips which I used for my practice. Here are the links for Hamsadwani- Adi, Malayamarutham-Rupaka and Bilahari-K.Chappu.

I love Abhogi too, loved "Sri Lakshmi Varaham" by Dikshitar set in this ragam. Splendid progressions. There seem to be two ways of rendering it - the way I play the song is the way Santhanam sings it because that's the rendition I have listened to most often. However, I found an old Semmangudi Iyer rendition of the song which has different swara progressions.Aishu wrote:Hello Friends,
Abhogi is such a wonderful ragam especially to play it on an instrument. I just finished learning Karuna Rasa jala dey.
I remember posting a half-done Abhogi once on my blog:
http://philramble.wordpress.com/2008/10/30/abhogi/
I think the player with my recording there isn't working right because of a broken link. Will restore it. For those of you who like Shakti, there's a composition of Zakir Hussain in Abhogi called Ma No Pa. The video is embedded into the post I've linked to above.

I heard this for the first time yesterday by DKP and Vijay Siva. A very impressive raga and composition. It sounded a bit like abhOgi and is listed as janya of 22 mEla.prashant wrote:Now learning: mahAlakshmi karuNArasa lahari mAm ava mAdhava manOhari shri - adi - muttusvAmi dIkshitar
What is the aro/ava for this raga and any interesting feature of this raga. There seems to be only one more (HMB) composition.

I've been trying to play Thodi for some time now, with lukewarm success at best. Since I am self-taught, the only person I can turn to for advice was Guitar Prasanna - not that I know him, but because there are vids strewn around on youtube about his guitar technique. One of these videos is his demonstration of Thodi in an alapana.

I tried playing a Thodi this morning:

Please listen. Do let me know if you have suggestions on how to play Thodi better. I use a standard fretted guitar (6 string electric) tuned CGCGCG which suits the male/female vocal range for the most part. I have used a bit of overdrive here in the amplifier to improve sustain and help me keep a note longer.

i wld just like to make a mention to Prashanths question as how to notate gamakams & learn them .
To notate gamakams is something very difficult. gamakams are to be learnt 1)take everything that is being taught . mind is a like human computer.as & when u want it automatically comes when u render. i am saying this from my personal experience i am in this field for the past thirty five years ..
constantly make it a point to hear a lot of Music

Thanks Prashant! A very detailed insight. So, are you learning with the appropriate D1 as per the notations?-I am guessing you are going with Smt Vedavalli's version. Do post a recording when you are done learning.prashant wrote: Suji - please see this very interesting blog post by our fellow member raviraj. A very insightful look into mAdhavamanOhari.

What are you learning now ?
Some time ago in our forum there used to be one such topic. I searched for the link and could not find it. I am starting this thread. In case someone can find the previous thread and merge that would be great.
After hearing Prof SRJ's rendition of the Mohanam Ata Tala varnam, in VK's thread "Attractive Charanam lines in Varnams", I called him up and asked him to teach me the varnam. He was so exuberant and started the varnam to be rendered in 3 speeds. What a session for an hour and a half.
I hope some of you will share what you all have been learning.

After reading this thread, I got the audacity to record a raga alapana. Appreciate your comments. Thanks. You may hear repetition of phrases. This is due to lack of swara jnana --- and hard work required to attempt to acquire it --- that is required to elaborate further.

Suji Ram...great blog...I don't know how I missed this for such a long time and some very very useful tips...
Learnt recently Varana Mukha - Hamsadwani - Source - Sri MSG
Kai vida mattan - Valaji - Source - Smt Aruna Sairam
While overall the songs have come out well, still some more work is needed to get a reasonable amount of ornamentation fitted into rendering. The chittaswaram gave me a bit of trouble, but anna came here and sorted me out.

Re: What are you learning now ?
VRV, Thanks for opening this thread again!
I am almost done with koniyADina nApai -- Ramnad Krishnan version. I simply am unable to get the mdp (mpdnpd mdp) part on the violin (I always have a problem coming "down" to pa on the A string, and here we even need a d anuswaram to demonstrate the force).
I guess if I keep trying, my fingers will figure out something before my brain does.
Next, I have many things to choose from -- finishing off rAvE himagirikumAri (I'll do second caraNam from notation and rest from KS's playing + reading lyrics), Adaya shrI raghuvara in Ahiri (KS + Alathur brothers), nA manavini (saurAShTram varNam of SS's) -- Notation + Rama Ravi, and ninnE kOri (Ahiri aTa tALa varNam) by Tharangambaadi Panchanadaiyar -- a disciple of Shyama Sastri, from notation alone.
Need to get some focus!

Srikant1987,
The Ramnad Krishnan version of koniyADina nApai is awesome. Who is the mridangam accompaniment on your recording.
Post a link of you playing it on the violin when you are ready.

Re: What are you learning now ?
Picked up Manasuna neranammiti (Begada) with the tantalising cittaswaram from Ramnad Krishnan recording. The cittaswaram may not be an original part of Patnam's composition (would like info on its composer), but counting it, that's three at least in Begada (Sankari neeve and Anudinamu are two others). I've heard three c-swarams in Poornacandrika (for Telisi rama, Palukave and for Sriranganatham which DKP/J sing). Any ragam with more than three?!

narayan,
Not sure if youve heard the chittaiswaram in tyAgarAjAya namastE that B-M sing! Could you also give me a link to the begada kriti? Not finding in my folder!
Im currently working on this beautiful shrI kumAra that Smt. Kalyani Shrama taught me today but the surutti padam (koNTegADu) that she taught me recently has been going on in my mind continuously. So long as I do not mix aThANa and suruTTI, fine!
