Thani Avarthanam
REvathi -RTP
Pallavi Text:
KA UmA UmA mA MAthangi MaragathAngi

Shudda DanyAsi - NarAyanA - mishra chApu, Purandara dAsar
Mangalam

My thoughts:
The concert was a part of their Thyagaraja utsavam and the brothers through a meditative dreamscape squeezed out the cosmic aura of the saint composer with their intense diction and sustained tones.
Their trademark ninnE bhajana came with intense lyricism.
In arabi raga alapana, Sri. Seshachari’s took artistic license, peppered it with ustAdi touches meandered between his artistic expression and classical symmetries, which I thought was quite charming.
Ragavachari’s shanmukhapriya alapana was quite unpretentious, hovering around the middle registers with classical serenity.

In revathi raga alapana and thAnam by Sri. Seshachari, he brought the poignant expressivity of the raga to the fore.

Sri. Sriram, nephew of Sri. Nagai. Muralidaran accompanied well with his fluid playing and Sri. Vaidyanathan’s elegant anticipatory playing was polished with technical excellence.

The concert was well attended with plenty of younger generation keeping thalam on a rainy friday evening and it was inspiring to watch the brothers hook the imagination of a new generation of fans as Sri. Seshachari broke into explaining the meaning of some of the compositions and revel at the thought process of the great vaggeyakaras with such intense emotion...

Revathi RTP...interesting.
Dinamanivamsha seems a little out of place there with just the alapana - but then again its not fair to judge a concert by a song list.

I'm guessing it (dinamaNi) was intended as the main item, but due to shortage of time, they decided to forgo N,S to get to the thani and subsequent RTP. The Hyd brothers sang a killer dinamaNi vamsa main in Singapore last year.

The bala hamsa kriti must have been ``dandamu pettenura'' by Tyagaraja which i have heard them sing. A very cheerful- sounding kriti.

Cheerful enough to distract you back from the puliyodarai aroma i thought! :)

Yes, it did have a nice folksy tune to it.
"Cheerful enough to distract you back from the puliyodarai aroma i thought!"
No, not when you find out that the kitchen will be closed around thani time and the mind trying to figure out a way to engage my intestines during my 3 hour trek back home...:)

Thank you Kedaram for a good review but it was painful to hear we missed great concert by Brothers and puliyodarai as well. Nice combination on a fall day in Chicago.
Heard their Arabhi in Singapore long time back, just amazing. I was fortunate to listen to their Dinamani in Chennasi last year, simply superb for lack of better words. Not an easy raga to handle.
Looking forward to attend their concert in San Diego

In revathi RTP, in the supposed to be swara ragamalika, they started with sahana swarams which was quite good but they drifted back to revathi....

The revathis RTP should have been Maheshwari, Ka Uma, Uma, Ma, Mathang, Maraghatani

Jigyaasa, you might be correct. Brothers are singing quite a fe pieces of Sri BMK if you haven't noticed, this might be their appreciation and guru bakthi towards sri BMK sir.
