Re: Data Migration Concerns
Hats off to the team doing this migration.
I sincerely hope all the features of the old system / forum will be there and only added with more features. One thing i notice is that while i can see a link to find the new post unable to make the ones appear as "mark as read" link. This helps a lot as a person need not see the same posts again and again. Pls adv if this is taken care.

I liked the old forum better. Easy user-friendly interface without too many complications. The colour scheme was a hundred times better. But anyway, change is the only constant thing! Hats off to the team!

Re: Data Migration Concerns
Good job on the migration and congratulations.
A couple of items still on my wish list, which I found useful in the previous forum:
1. A serial number for each post under a topic. I couldn't find it here. Earlier we used to make references to older posts in the same thread (e.g. refer to #37 above...) - now the only way to point to a specific post is using the timestamp of the post?
2. I also miss the 'yesterday', 'today' tags on the timestamp of posts.

I would like to see the latest/last post first; earlier it was possible by clicking on 'last post'; now if we click on that we get only the profile of the poster.

Dear Administrator,
1.I would like to use my old password. How to change the new password alloted to me by you.
2.The letters appear in a smedged manner in the new format. Will you be able to change to the old bold and clear letters as used in the old format?

Sri. Nageswaran, in the interim, if you look at the top right hand corner, below the 'Advanced search', you will see a dimly lit 'A' with a up and down arrow. Click on that a few times. It will take you through three different sizes. That does not change the font but only the size. See if that helps in the short term. Also, in your browser's view menu itme, there is an option to 'Zoom in'.

Hi moderators,
My posts in the old forum have not been migrated (Not that they are of any great value...but it is likely that there are forumites, whose valuable posts are missing too.)
Interestingly in the thread which I started in the new forum http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=12490 , my post is reflected under some other user id.

Re: Data Migration Concerns
# The so called forum_flux we had was like a japanese car (honda and toyota). Then from the beginning of this month till the last few days we had a poor website which sucked big time like a typical chinese grey market stuff. Now in the last few days this site is somewhere in between, say a korean car hyundai . I have lot of cribs. Let me take the major ones first
1. We all usually open our website and open in new tabs different unread posts. The good news is it goes to the last unread posts , but the bad news is the session is not persisted across tabs if I need to post reply or quick reply , irritatingly it asks me to login. Fix this big time annoyance, session impersistence.
Other cribs will follow, I am away from forum as I am travelling till monday. good job srkris in atleast giving the korean stuff instead of that big time goof up that was before for the last few weeks :*
Infact I typed this and every time I submit it is irritatingly asked 3 times the login and password again.

Rajesh: I tried to repro your problem with my login id with firefox but could not. Right clicked on the unread posts icon and opened it in another tab and then added a reply in that tab. That worked OK Is this the right repro procedure? I would expect the login credentials cookie to apply to the entire browser and hence to apply to all the tabs. Not sure what is causing your problem. Let us see if others can reproduce your issue.

What are you cribbing about?
It is in the OED.
crib v. b. To complain, to grumble. colloq. Cf. crib-biter.
1957 L.P.Hartley Hireling xi. 90 She calls on the neighbours, she's out half the time and doesn't answer the telephone, and when I start cribbing she just laughs.

I am not, perhaps other people who use "crib" synonymous with complaint are.sureshvv wrote:Seems that you may be lingo challenged.
The right word for complain is "whinge" - refer http://www.thefreedictionary.com/whinge
And vasanthakokilam, I did not find crib and complain as synonymous in OED.
Refer http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/crib?view=uk
As per OED, crib as a verb means copy (something) illicitly or without acknowledgement / steal.

laks1972, check the full OED and not the concise one. I do not think the full one is available for free online.
In any case, what is the point? It is in common usage in Indian English.

laks1972:
Well, as VK says so many new words have found their way into the dictionary. So, any word is meant to convey the meaning intended by the user. A few years ago somebody in an online magazine in India used the word "dekko". I was perplexed since I did not see it in my dictionary. Then someone told me that word is a morph of "dEkO" (from Hindi) and got into OED to convey the meaning of "view" (as a noun).
But coming to the word in question "crib", if the word is supposed to mean "complain" in the verb form can it be used in the noun form too as "I have a few cribs" (to mean complaints)? Experts can tackle this one.

The problems that I mentioned before are still there(session not persisting)
# When I open new tabs for different posts and then click on post reply , it takes me again to the login and password page. I enter it then go again to that post in the first tab page and then reply works . So as such session is not persisted across tabs.
# Also I am getting an annoying message at times
"Sorry but you are not permitted to use the search system."
When I browse and click on any of the links
'Overall the usability problems are indeed still killing me', empowered to post but session is not persisted.
# Also I would like exactly the same way as show new topics and show posts of every user. Right now the messages are shown with only the first new lines and then ... appears for more .That does not give me an insight about the user who posted in one go , so as such forum_flux of show all topics and show all posts of the user is needed.

Nick for the whole forum, (you can mark all unread posts in all the threads as read) it is at the bottom in the Board Index view, just under the Q and A thread. To mark topics in a particular thread as read, you have to open that thread (for example, General Discussions) and you will see the tab to mark posts in that thread as read in the upper right hand corner at the same level of the 'New Topic' tab on the left.

Rajesh, the session not persisting for you alone may be related to your own systems (I see you are using the forum from your workplace) and proxy settings etc that are not directly related to the forum itself. Your search issues are also related to the session data.
With respect to the display of new posts, I will look into it.

Yes, but the old smileys were not animated.
Some of these emoticons are dispensable.
Why would VK whinge if he has so many secret admirers?

Re: Data Migration Concerns
srkris
I am listing problems one after another to take stock as of now
Problems listed as of Feb 25th,2010:
----------------------------------
1.Date and time of each post should be with the beginning or header of the posts, just like what you have it here. It is just frustrating to see a long post then go to the end to see the date and time.
2. In the forum_flux we used to have two superb links called
'View all ramakriya's posts' and 'View all ramakriya's topics' which will give an expanded view of all posts vs few lines of posts with a ... as this site shows. That is a key feature for each of us to recognize who are all whose jalras , whose post should we respond , whose posts we should pass , please give that weapon back to each user.
3. The font is not as elegant and the background is not as elegant as the forum_flux which just rocked .Few forumites are finding it difficult to read. I am assuming font is ok only background color is the key .Try giving this color combination
http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1241 ... alore.html, the gray can be made little more towards white(in the same link you can see the date and time that I indicated for issue #1).This is just minor but if you can correct it that is fine.
4.Make the link 'mark all posts read' right next to 'view new posts' and 'view your posts' dont hide it behind the board index, every body is struggling to find the titanic ship in this atlantic ocean.
5. Super Major problem - Search is not working at all, fix everything.
I have five more typed I will post it later...
Most importantly I dont want you to get distracted in you writing any posts on anustanams/customs etc which you have replied.I do know if anything concerns on languages you , mahakavi and cmlover will have long battles . You can wait and be an active poster till you fix the above 5. You are the enabler for each of us to enable ourselves
Finally as a matter of absolute truth , the forum_flux was rocking everything worked with one important naked feature where in users can delete what they have posted , even that feature I have found scripts in forum_flux itself . If ever you asked us I would have helped you.
The reason you migrated was the transliteration language issue problem which may be there or not there (the reason you stated for migration, can you direct me to the link which has the problem fixed, since without search being functional I am not able to go that post) .
But as such you went ahead and you alone want to do everything,so as such for that small correction in that site itself , we lost may things now. Any way you win I lose, now we have moved forward.
By the way as such data appears preserved , you have done a great job in data migration (though not 100% sure perhaps transliteration language thread if you point out it is may be 100%)
But usability and users coming back , it is subjudice now |(

Have to agree with Rajesh on the points above, esp #3. The old forum was so much easier on the eye.
I have a hunch that if you can set the font/background close to that of the old forum, more of the 'lost members' would come back. The new look and feel doesn't measure up.
