Re: RASIKAS MEET DURING DECEMBER 2010.
Dear Mahakavi,
What you have written is very relevent& true. Precisely it is these kinds of factors I felt MERITS discussion by persons with varying degrees of EXPERTISE. I find just having experts results in MOST of the audience correctly feeling left out. Forums like these are also inadequate because of the composition of persons who have diverse interests& levels of expertise.
I feel in an extended meeting at least there is enough time to TRY to discuss something of interest to most persons. PLEASE continue to share your thoughts as I am STRUGGLING with how to approach Tiruchi Sankaran a GIANT of Twentieth Century with his Guru who I cannot even describe on a Logrithamic Scale. I feel just saying one is great is not good enough. We shd. be able to be more perceptive about it. He is a close friend also!.....VKV I would not like to be part of a LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR EFFORT......

Nick, YOU are the least of my worries on the linguistic front because in American Slang expression "your head is screwed on right". In principle there could be other "non-tamilians" also in the audience. It all boils down to audience as well as the speakers being "SENSITIVE" to this factor.....VKV

vkv:
With proper planning and a moderator (who is not an expert himself in the subject under discussion) you can negotiate a subject well and apportion it among several participants. The experts will get a greater share of the time but shall not hog the discussion. The moderator can direct the flow between experts and novices by letting an expert pitch in after 2 or 3 novices had their say. Sometimes the novice can ask a question which the expert can only gloss over. The expert should not feel "ashamed" to declare his/her inadequacy in answering a question.
With respect to taking Trichy Sankaran on the stage (if he agrees and has the time) one of you rasika doyens can take the stage and start the discussion after giving a brief introduction about his musical lineage. Perhaps a short video, if available. Opportunity should be given to the participants so that everybody gets a chance to ask a question of the maestro. If you run out of questions from the floor then one of you doyens can fill in the gaps. The maestro will understand if you fall short. Besides they don't like all superlatives anyway. They would think it comes from awe. Any praise should be at the ground level if it comes from the heart. Recently the editor of chennaionline.com interviewed Trichy Sankaran by letting the maestro describe his background and his attachment to his guru PSP (?). It came out well. If you are interested in seeing it try chennaionline.com and search there for Trichy Sankaran video interview.

Re: RASIKAS MEET DURING DECEMBER 2010.
VKV,
You asked me for my suggestions.
Let me get this out of our way first: about my sharing my thoughts as a composer: Ramaraj would have said this too. I'm sure other composers of this day would agree with us. Though not active, Ashok Madhavan is a forumite too. Anyway, what we would like is that performers sing our songs here and there in their concerts so that the listeners get familiar with them. Rasikas then will see if the songs have any merit. There is no point about my saying something which people don't know about! If anyone is interested in a fellow forumite's work, they will find it in the Vaggeyakara Section where there were questions about how a composition comes about.
The ideal composer for such a session is DRS! A man of scholarship and creativity combined in one.To our regret, he is not active on the forum.
My suggestions?
We have two brilliant forumites who know an immense amount about music, both have excellent gurus--one a veteran and another a prodigy. How I would like to hear Kalpagam Mami (with Ramki encouraging her) to share her experiences as a student, teacher, performer!
And Uday with his guru! ((may not be possible, with Ravikiran's Dec schedule, stiill, no harm in hoping)--or atleast Uday speaking about his life as a student and of his guru. Uday is capable of holding a seminar on this!
And TVS (if he can spare us the time) speak about his uncle and father and his family and of his musical life with them!
If only wishes would come true! At least one of them!

Re: RASIKAS MEET DURING DECEMBER 2010.
There is a good chance I will be able to attend. Any content is fine although if it isnt that much differentiated from a lec-dem session (a few speak but most are wide-eyed listeners, just thrilled to be a fly on the wal), then it isn't as groundbreaking as more open forum where some of the wide-eyed ones can loosen up and speak up (?). Just a thought. And I dont (yet) have a better solution
- like i implied originally, I will be just happy attend

Ayyayyo Arasi... |( please don't make me cringe...I am not even a "student" anymore and entirely unworthy of the exalted company that I sometimes keep. So let's bury this meme right now.
To change the subject, Arun is certainly an expert on "computers and carnatic music" and could hold seminars on the subject. Perhaps that's an idea...

Re: RASIKAS MEET DURING DECEMBER 2010.
Hi folks: Cannot tell you how much of this thread I am enjoying--VKV,Uday et al. VKV talks of those experiences of walking long distances to hear Mali,MMI etc. Let me share one of my own.
In 1954(still a student @ Presidency College under the tutelage of VKV I might add),I used to take the bus 21-B from mandavali(where i was living with my aunt) to Presidency College--all the way along the Marina beach( Presidency College was the ONLY college in Chennai which had SEA-BREEZE as well as SHE_BREEZE(the only coed College besides Pachaiyappas in those days-- a poor joke I admit!!!!).
It was Friday evening--in a jam-packed bus I overheard two Chettiar ladies discussing an upcoming marriage on Sunday in Puraswalkam where the ladies mentioned TNR was supposed to be playing for the Kalyana Kutcheri. With the three words, TNR,Purasawalkam,Chettiar's were all the words that I needed . In the absence of Google,Internet, my investigative skills took over and with the help of friends(no phones only door-to-door investigations) I located the place --the marriage was being held in a School in Purasawalkam--managed to reach the place from Mylapore to Purasawalkam--in those days one had to change buses and the journey and the frequency were not easy-yet I a managed to "gate-crash" the wedding reception--was enthusiastically received as was the custom in those days----felt awkward and shy--what can they do--they can only throw me out which they did not--listened to about 2 to 2 and half hours(I had to return by bus all the way to Mylapore late night!!) Wonderful music--TNR was in his moods played a Rithigowla, and a Ragamalika swarams in Kambodhi.Keeravani--To this day it would not be an exaggeration to claim that my music sense of appreciation increased ten-fold that day. When I was leaving the welcome party at the gate asked me to stay over for Dinner--I felt guilty as an uninvited guest, did not want to push my luck and bolted home without diner--hungry but satisfied beyond satiety!!!
VKV Plan to be in Chennai(God willing!!) during December-feb--Would love to participate and do whatever YOU want for the MMI(is it not amazing that fellows of our ilk could enjoy MMI GNB,ARI,SSI Mali,TNR all at the same time --with the different bani's and sheer joy--their repertoire although wide was still standard fare and no matter how many times we listened to the same songs of GNB and MMI they never went stale!!
Oh for those halcyon days

I should not be envious, because I'm sure I had my reasons for being born where and where I was, and of course there was magic of different kinds in my youth, but, really, some of you guys are just so lucky! Halcyon days indeed!
And, I regard it as something of a challenge to get to Purasawalkam even today --- in my car!

Nick; An offer during the upcoming Music season-if and when we meet @ Nageswaran's or any other place,we will have some fun "reliving" those days mimicking those greats(a taste of how much they influenced me and prevented me from formally learning under one tutor--for fear of being compelled to follow one Bani.
As Udhay would testify we had some fun "mimicking" @ the Cleveland Aradana in the company of Trichur V Ramachandran much to his amusement--some additional material not hitherto presented will also be available!!!l

Re: RASIKAS MEET DURING DECEMBER 2010.
Dear Rasikas,
I am very happy to see how the Rasikas are very enthusiastic about participating in the proposed meeting at my home during December 2010 convened by Sri VKV.
With the indication of many Rasikas in suggesting a number topics wished to be discussed, VKV must have his hands full {in addition to have discussions about MMI and PMI which Sri VKV wants to present}.
Perhaps we may have to have 2 days for covering other topics selected by majority
of the Rasikas.

Re: RASIKAS MEET DURING DECEMBER 2010.
MKR is certainly a highly talented musician who we lost to a corporate career
.
I wouldn't let his self-deprecation about the "imitation" mislead people about the highest quality music that punctuate his singing. I wouldn't want to belittle the effort he must have put into his singing but it is amazing how much early association with the great masters, a "Carnatic satsangh" if you will, brings out the inherent gnyanam in a person. There a "soul" that is brough out simply by that kind of association (sometimes without the knowledge of the person doing it !). This is something that is lost to the modern casette (and now MP3) generation strewn around the world.
When MKR sings (or imitates!) I am reminded of all the past masters he has had the privilege of associating with - ARI, GNB, MMI, Alathoor...I use to have a similar reaction when I heard my late father-in-law Shri Rammohan sing.
Back in Cleveland, when MKR hesitated to sing something owing to, in his words, diffidence due to the presence of veteran vidvan Shri Trichur Ramachandran, the latter jokingly remarked "bhayama ?! ongallariyum paathu naangaLaakkum bhayappadaNum!" (afraid ?! WE have to be afraid of YOU folks!).

I had also once gate crashed into a wedding hall, where Shri SSI was singing;listened to the full cutchery and as I was leaving, I was asked to have dinner . I blurted out 'sorry, I am not an invitee, just came to listen to the cutcheri' and exited without having dinner as Shri.MKR did.Another coincidence, I was also a student of Presidency college then.

Dear MKR,
If you can write YOUR TIME REQUIREMENT I will be happy to adjust the rest of the program SUITABLY&. ACCOMODATE YOU. VKV
It does not mean your time has to be 30 mins. It can be one hour or more if you wish. Actually I DO NOT LIKE TO SPEAK AT ALL! SO MY TIME IS TOTALLY AVAILABLE & ALL SAID & DONE PROPER JUSTICE IS MY REQUIREMENT as any subject should be PROPRLY dealt with. VKV

Let me make both of you jealous: MMI wanted me to come to his concert at Ramnad Rajah's relative's wedding at Abbotsbury & actually took me in his car along with LIC SSV(my close companion)&seated us on stage. I ended up having Dinner there in the company of LGJ& PALANI which to me is STILL the closest to HEAVEN I will ever get!........ Mali has done similar things when I did not have one rupee to get into his concerts.PUNARVASU wrote:I had also once gate crashed into a wedding hall, where Shri SSI was singing;listened to the full cutchery and as I was leaving, I was asked to have dinner . VKV,
You are a doer but for a change, you can preside too, being a man who is a stickler for time which means Nick doesn't ned to worry about long speeches!! Have you considered my suggestions, by the way? Uday has said no, but you could ask the others, if you like.

Dinner with MMI, Lalgudi and Palani, *after* a concert of them, which I know [assumption here of course, but I'd gamble on that] would have been brilliant.
VKV ji. It's not fair, you are playing with us now, like having a Royal Flush in Poker
No sir, I fold. I will sit far away, observe, listen and learn in the hope I learn from your vast knowledge and experience! You presiding this occasion, I am sure will be the icing on the cake for people reminiscing about MMI and PMI.

Uday/Arasi/VKV/CML: Thanks for your kind words. As you may all have noticed my passion for Music and the persons who provide it is limitless.
VKV--let's stick to 30 mts or 45 mts at the most--it should not be at the expense of others- AS YOU are aware my Sarakku is limited!!!
Re;the MMI function itself, will give you a call next week--we can discuss details.
Hope to start on the SSI Saga next week!!

Re: RASIKAS MEET DURING DECEMBER 2010.
have been PONDERING about your suggestions. I still feel that YOU are the ideal person as you are aware of TIME in the Newtonian sense & can request some one like (Sumitra Nitin?) to co-operate& render the compositions..... I will be happy to be Time Keeper strictly becuse of my past experiences. I can keep time, nudge the speakers to conform to time limitatios & try to be fair to questioners etc; In short I can act as TIME keeper & an "insensive"person like the one who banged the cymbols on the US TV Show called Gong Show. No need to be called presiding etc & make it fancier than it really is!...My passion is the SUBJECT MATTER. If I can communicate the excitement of having been in the presence of MMI& PMI I will be exstatic& worth any amount of efforts. Of course I will try to get other closer persons to participate....arasi wrote:And if only we could get a glimpse of him even, to say how we cherish him! Anyway, he's one of us, being a rasikA!

REG President Kalam not only is he a very busy man & I feel- like in the case of Tiruchi Sankaran- WE have to provide the Proper Forum & I am NOT SURE this one is....VKV

Yes. Perhaps at least half the time could be spent getting to know the people attending and hear about their thoughts. And yes, shoot the breeze a bit too.Nick H wrote:if the accent is on humanity rather than technicality, then I believe it will be a success for all.

Whilst my TS suggestion was certainly realistic (and I feel that he might well consider a moderate-sized group of seriously interested rasikas a very good forum --- but, unlike you, I do not know him), my president-Kalam idea, much as I would like to meet the great man, was light-hearted.cacm wrote:REG President Kalam not only is he a very busy man & I feel- like in the case of Tiruchi Sankaran- WE have to provide the Proper Forum & I am NOT SURE this one is....VKV

That will happen, anyway, so long as people are not so focussed on the season methodology of moving on to the next event!ragam-talam wrote:Yes. Perhaps at least half the time could be spent getting to know the people attending and hear about their thoughts. And yes, shoot the breeze a bit too.

Thats automatically done during the meeting as well as lunch hanging on afterwards ETC. Actually singing, lecturing, audience questioning, sharing views on the subject matter is NOT MORE THAN 50 PERCENT OF THE TIME. VKV

Re: RASIKAS MEET DURING DECEMBER 2010.
VKV,
As for getting Abdul Kalam in our midst, 'only in our dreams' fits here! I was merely saying, even to get a glimpse of that great man would be bliss.
Thank you for your faith (?) in me. I was wondering: how much (as in the quote of one of our well known forumites) I may resemble his image of 'the mami in our neighborhood scribbling songs'
If we cannot find anything better to do, I'm sure we can ask Sumitra to sing (if she is free that day).

If that's what you have in mind, you may have to suggest a few dates for the meeting first, so that you can find out if the participants are free on those days.
If Harimau is reading this, he might label our meeting appaLak kacEri, considering that you're asking me to participate
I have no clue about the GNB reference! You can send me an E-mail about it to avoid unnecessary diversions in the thread.Thanks.

Sri.S.nageswaran & MKR etc BETTER SPEAK UP about the L;IKELY DATES....Reg GNB, I was just reflecting the Statistics that the majority of his concert audience was "Mylapore Ammamis"...Just a simple statistical observation with NO IMPLICATIONS on my part....VKVarasi wrote:If that's what you have in mind, you may have to suggest a few dates for the meeting first, so that you can find out if the participants are free on those days.

Re: RASIKAS MEET DURING DECEMBER 2010.
Tentative date and programme for the Rasikas meet in December 2010.
We may have our Rasikas meet on 25.12.2010, being a Saturday and a holiday for the Chennai Rasikas in large numbers to attend the meet.
I appeal to all the Rasikas abroad to take this opportunity to meet the local Rasikas also. Some important concerts may be scheduled as morning concert in many Sabhas
On 25th December. If the majority of the Rasikas feel that 25th morning concert is to be attended, we may have our meeting on 18th December [Saturday] 2010.
Since all the artists will any how sing in many Sabhas, I request all the Rasikas to make it a point to attend our meeting without fail.
Programme Schedule.
1. Invocation song by ---------
2. Welcome address and the overview for the meet – By Sri VKV.
3. Mutual introduction of all Rasikas.
4. Rasikas opinion on the points to be discussed.
5. Initiation of the talk on MMI and PMI ---- Sri VKV.
6. Rasikas comments.
7. Short concert by Srinidhi.
8. Short Speech by Sri AM Sharmaji [If he is attending the meet ].
9. Lunch and Gossip time; -- 1.00PM to 2.00 PM.
Sri VKV and Rasikas to decide about continuing our meet from 2.00 PM to 4.PM.
Rasikas have expressed a wish for a talk about PSN & T.S.
In case Sri VKV is able to make Sri T.S to attend our meet, it would be better to conduct
this meet at Ragasuda Hall.
In such a case we can have this programme at a latter day convenient to Sri T.S and the Rasikas.
Rasikas may express their opinions.

MAY I REQUEST PROSPECTIVE PRESENTERS LIKE MKR, ARASI etc to write in this section their reactions to my proposed schedule along with all the Rasikas planning to attend. WE NEED A HEAD COUNT because seating, food& several other things have to be co-ordinated by S.Nageswaran. I have stated along with my "Stone Throwing" document my inputs. VKV mkr has said he prefers dec 20th or 24th in a separate communication.......Instead of "Ozakkila Kizakku" way of doing things lets be open in discussing stuff & avoid the criticisms of others who are trying to organise things.......VKV
